Hey, artists, in case you were wondering if your work matters: I'm a scientist working on climate change and biodiversity, and I would not be who I am today without The Lorax, The Secret of NIMH, Watership Down, The Last Unicorn, and The X-Files. I know I'm not alone. Thank you for all you do.

Global, land, and ocean temperature change distributions since the 1880s. A very clear warming signal in all of them. Data: NASA GISS / GISTEMP (base period: 1951–1980). #climate #ClimateChange #GlobalWarming #DataVisualization #dataviz 🌍🌡️📈

"When New Scientist asked explicitly if human-caused climate change played any role in the record high temperatures, the NOAA press representative abruptly ended the call, saying, “I’m not seeing any more on-topic questions from the media""

The next federal election is a chance to mitigate the climate regression happening south of the border. @sethklein.bsky.social puts it “The current Trump-induced crisis is no time to beat a path back to the old fossil fuel economy — it’s a chance to leap into the new.”

There you have it, straight from the horse’s (former oil exec’s) mouth: the world economy has long moved on from the oil sands. The economy we had in 1997 is gone and so is the time we have to limit warming. Every drop of oil that stays in the ground is crucial now. macleans.ca/economy/why-...

All 👀 on @imohq.bsky.social ! Support is growing for a carbon levy in shipping @rregenvanu.bsky.social argues that “a carbon levy would incentivise the clean energy transition in the shipping industry and provide the funding needed for it to be equitable” www.climatechangenews.com/2025/02/13/a...

Hope is something we create through our actions every day. Had a great time on @calgaryclimatehub.ca's Climate Lens podcast. Sharing experiences from the last few decades of activism and what keeps me fighting every day.

Today's lunchtime listen, hot off the presses! #TzeporahBerman of stand.earth & the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative. Dig in! fossilfueltreaty.org @fossiltreaty.bsky.social @tzeporah.bsky.social #FossilFuelTreaty #FossilFuelNonProliferation #Climate #abpoli #cdnpoli #EnergyTransition

Episode 30 out today! @tzeporah.bsky.social joined us on The Climate Lens to share lessons learned in her decades of activism. The political winds are always changing but the physics of our planet and the economics of the energy transition aren't. "Hope is Something We Create." #abpoli #climate

“Africa needs regional development plans where national resources are complemented and built out across countries … it doesn’t need more siloed oil and gas projects.” @fadhelkaboub.bsky.social on the push to expand Africa’s fossil fuel infrastructure www.aljazeera.com/news/2025/2/...

Carbon capture more costly than switching to renewables, researchers find. “If you spend $1 on carbon capture instead of on wind, water, & solar, you are increasing CO2, air pollution, energy requirements, energy costs, pipelines, and total social costs.” techxplore.com/news/2025-02...

Should we even bother talking about climate change? The answer is yes. (Don’t let the deniers take you off message, people are motivated to protect what they love) @chrishatch.bsky.social digs into the research. www.nationalobserver.com/newsletters/...

In case it escaped your notice, Chrystia Freeland quietly loaned the Trans Mountain project $20b in public money before resigning in December. This is another hit in the barrage of lies and broken promises in the near-decade since the feds bought TMX 🧵

We couldn't agree more. It's long past time that we not only end all harmful subsidies and financial incentives for the fossil fuel industry, but also ensure that those profiting of pollution pay their fair share of the resulting climate damage. #MakePollutersPay

Current climate pledges add up to a 2.7 degree world. That means uninhabitability of large swaths of the planet due to fires and lethal heat We need countries to fight “the Trump effect” by showing leadership by filing ambitious climate plans that will keep citizens safe www.cbc.ca/news/science...

“This is not a small blow for climate research – it is a body blow.” I spoke to the @nationalobserver.com about Trump and Musk’s attacks on the NOAA. www.nationalobserver.com/2025/02/07/n...

Great! Just what the world needs, a new polluting plastics plant built by Exxon. 🤦‍♀️ The top financiers (i.e enablers) of climate denying Exxon include Citi, which has financed $13 billion of the company’s business.

I was just told that I have to remove “climate” from the title of an ongoing grant if I want to keep it. And publications from that grant cannot include “climate” and other forbidden words. I can’t believe I’m writing this from the United States of America. #AcademicSky

Climatologists are calling January's heat records “astonishing and frankly terrifying” and a direct result of increased use of oil, gas and coal. A good round up here of the science and the implications: Zero Carbon with @chrishatch.bsky.social this week. www.nationalobserver.com/newsletters/...

Wiping the USDA website of climate change related info is going to have devastating consequences. Info on climate impacts is critical to figuring out how to ensure resiliency and crop yields in the face of increasing floods, fires and drought

Don’t allow yourself to get overwhelmed. To just swim in the deluge. And if you haven’t already sign up to @rebeccasolnit.bsky.social new newsletter. You will get critical information and the inspiration you need to organize.

"The best study on the subject in my opinion suggests that in the long term, institutions really can’t save us; that civil society and mass mobilization are a more potent check on a backsliding democracy in the long term..." meditations-in-an-emergency.ghost.io/the-nature-o...

Hiding information about the climate crisis won’t make it go away. It won’t stop the fires, floods, spoiled crops, heatwaves, droughts or hurricanes. It will only mean that we are less prepared and that they will increase in the future affecting millions of people in America and beyond...

Trump/Musk/DOGE are attacking the National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration and attempting to dismantle it. This should worry you. This should worry us all, and here’s why 🧵👇

These are the people who monitor and publish Lake Superior's conditions every day. Minnesotans along the North Shore rely on NOAA to know whether or not it’s safe to go out on the water. These agencies and their staff do real work that keeps us safe, it just goes unnoticed - until they’re gone.

Bad news for all of us: wiping mentions of climate from a website won’t make the laws of physics or reality go away.

It is not at all dramatic to call this purging of climate change information from federal government websites a modern day book burning. This is a prelude to much worse things to come for scientists, journalists, and climate truth-tellers. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...
