A great little art exhibit at MEK Berlin reflecting on Germans who vacationed in Franco’s Spain, and, more generally, on the ever-relevant dilemma: what does vacationing in dictatorships and authoritarian regimes do? www.smb.museum/en/exhibitio...

I love the title of this conference in Berlin: 'Resentment and the Work of the Humanities.' Not sure it could happen in the UK, given the mix of demoralisation and either resignation (you've already been done over) or fear (you're going to be done over soon) chcinetwork.org/am25

Some lovely news. @uclpress.bsky.social has just had its 20 millionth open access download. And the download in question was Structural Injustice and the Law, edited by @vmantouvalou.bsky.social and myself. uclpress.co.uk/book/structu...

I recently reviewed Post-Europe, by Yuk Hui @digitalobjects.bsky.social, for @iajournal.bsky.social‬, in which he imagines a philosophical project able to establish a dialogue between European and Asian systems of thought. An intriguing book. academic.oup.com/ia/article/1...

A very good piece about the Dreyfus affair and its meaning in contemporary France. Like Bell, I highly recommend the current Dreyfus exhibition in the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire du Judaïsme in Paris. open.substack.com/pub/davidabe...

Quite a thing - as any student of judicial politics will tell you - for a letter to be signed both by former supreme court justice Jonathan Sumption and by former appeal judge Stephen Sedley. They are about as far apart in their judicial outlooks as possible. lawyersletter.uk#signatories

On his first visit to Manchester in 1875 Freud wrote to a friend how much he liked its ‘fog and rain, drunkenness and conservatism.’

Intriguing and beautifully written.

This week's university redundancies are the following: *Bangor *Cardiff Met *De Montfort *Liverpool Hope *Plymouth *Suffolk That's after last week's Aberdeen, Arts Uni Bournemouth, Durham, Exeter, Falmouth, Greenwich, Keele, Newcastle, Nottingham and Trinity St Davids.

Agreeing with @simonusherwood.bsky.social's assessment of the 'youth experience' scheme floated in the UK-EU deal (and enjoying the nifty table on different youth mobility proposals in recent years). theconversation.com/the-uk-might...

Excellent write-up of the UK-EU deal and what it means in terms of progress (or not) - from one Lancaster House occasion to another.

Main takeaways on HEI issues: Both Youth Mobility & Erasmus+ Former: time limits & likely cap, in line with other UK deals Latter: fair balance in terms of numbers & funds Both: hard to resolve sticking points but commitment is there Nothing on EU student fees www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2025/05...

Those of us old enough to remember PM Theresa May's Jan 2017 Lancaster House speech - setting out her govt's negotiating objectives for exiting the EU - can appreciate the progress (& historical ironies) as Starmer welcomes VdL and Costa to Lancaster House for the UK-EU summit today.

Good point: * given that all will be labelled a betrayal (extending a fisheries agreement Johnson negotiated, introducing a youth mobility scheme like the one we have with Canada, etc.) * and (I add) given public opinion polls, Labour politicians might well be bolder in their aims.

The data pulled together by @sundersays.bsky.social at British Future (below) and @stephenkb.bsky.social for the FT (tinyurl.com/bdz92tup) are interesting additional reads for any media comments on Youth Mobility, as we're gearing up for the UK-EU deal being announced.

Details to be announced later today, but the new UK-EU deal, resetting the post-Brexit trade relationship, has been agreed - as usual, quite close to the wire. Security/defence is the big one, but fishing, travel & youth mobility will likely make the headlines. www.politico.eu/article/eu-a...
