So Star Wars MMO “Star Wars: The Old Republic” (swtor.com) has apparently been test-driving a Mac client as an open beta since last December and I completely missed it. It's Apple Silicon only, but if you always wanted to try this cool BioWare game, here's your chance. It's linked directly […]

*comes up for air* *loud gasp* INTERNET! I HAVE INTERNET!

Wait, I never realized, but you can just patch traps on classic macOS from an app, no? Because it's all one memory space, the app will just override the whole system? Somehow I went to the effort of writing an ‘INIT' to notify my app of occurrences in other apps. Or does each app get its own […]

AI chatbots and telephone menu trees with bad voice recognition. A match made in hell. And I thought this company's support experience couldn't get any worse.

#Android friends, how do you unit test your #JNI / #KNI code? Do you write extra KNI glue just so you can trigger internal native methods that call back out into #Kotlin? Do you restrict yourself to only integration tests and black-box tests and just *not* unit-test this stuff? All solutions […]

Announcing the third entry in my collection of weird little Mac apps: Hyperspace https://hypercritical.co/2025/02/25/hyperspace Hyperspace can reclaim disk space *without removing any files.* Read the linked post to learn how it works.

Anyone seen Xcode's mom?

@tuparev If that last repost was a serious question you also had: I don't have the nerve to do a full explainer, but in short: People who are over-represented (like us) don’t lack in positive role models, and people that show them that what they're going through is justified and normal or […]

After @jamescallender recently asked about my use of C++'s std::atomic and its overload of operator ++, I realized that the way it works with all other types (they return a reference to *this so you can chain them) means you can do horrible things like ++foo++ I mean, yes. But also NO NO […]

Just remembered that a few days ago on the way to lunch there were paint splashes on the windows of an Amazon office building in our office park. Assuming it was part of a political statement?

Yes Clang, just saying "requested here" without a line number is VERY useful in an error message.

I should blog about “lo-fi Git tricks”. Things like that it's sometimes totally legitimate to say “screw rebasing this branch" and just start from another branch and then copy over the few lines you've changed (you can just look at your pull request or some other readable diff).

The logotype of car company AVATR looks like a prank design by a movie nerd assembled from Alien vs. Predator‘s font, one of the two Avatar franchises, and a late 2000s tech startup name. I want a tote bag with that logo like the lady I just saw here.

TIL that Carmen Sandiego is not the heroic detective, but the evil crime lord the player has to track down. None of the trailers told me that!

Remember, Trekkies: Can‘t write Stargate without Targ.

There's a Wifi named “Augsburg" outside. *peeks through the blinds* ... anyone I know?

@ivory If I have a draft (on Mac) that is a reply to a post that has been deleted, I can’t delete it. As soon as I try to open it, it says "the post has been deleted”, but doesn't ask if I want to save, and therefore I can't delete the draft. The draft now eternally stays in my list of drafts.

OK, I guess this will have to be enough for getting a quick build of an app ready without having to risk my credentials on a random GitHub user. Will later have to test whether it's building the executable for the correct kind of distribution in the archive step.

Does GitHub really not offer built-in actions for safely building a properly signed app for Apple ecosystems (in this case, Mac)? Everything seems to rely on running a GitHub Action from some random user's account and giving it my certificates (with the documentation usually being way vague […]

Hello second un-announced internet outage of the month on a Sunday and therefore the day I‘m planning to stream. And the outage reporting site is down and says it‘ll be back on Monday.

Woke up a bit early today, so decided to write a C++ class that implements a copy-on-write string that's a drop-in replacement for std::string (*not* for std::basic_string!). https://github.com/uliwitness/cow_str/blob/main/cow_str/cow_str.hpp #cplusplus #cpp

Internet was down for a split-second when my Mac started up. App Store app: #onlyAppleCanDoThis

How's Xcode with multiple Apple IDs these days? Feels like having a separate Apple ID for iCould and purchases gets worse every time I set up a new Mac. Even when I don't initially log in at startup, if I then set up an Apple ID for the app store, it randomly infects iCloud and Safari sync as […]

Was confused because the news were reporting that the new Apple wireless modem had been mainly developed in Munich. Apple having development or software engineering in Germany seemed so out of character, that I assumed they must have bought some company (but Intel isn't a German company […]
