Glad to see others feel this way. I’m not even someone who engages with visual novels but western devs weird obsession with making a mockery of the genre is weird to me. Doki Doki Literature Club worked BECAUSE it respected the genre. Stuff like this just feels like “OMG SO QUIRKY” derogatorily.

I really do think Bananaza is a total lore reboot. Nintendo doesn't really give a shit about story consistency, ESPECIALLY when it comes to anything Mario or Mario adjacent. Cranky Kong and him making references to other DK titles is just there to make the player go "I REMEMBER!" and nothing deeper.
