This morning I dragged myself out of bed at 3:00 to head to the West End Bridge in hopes of capturing the moon over PPG Place and the Christmas tree at the Point in #Pittsburgh. Luckily the clouds stayed away for long enough to allow that to happen. Made for an amazing view.

Michael Mayer as the Fanged Wyvern: This monster radiates a murderous aura and attacks anything in its path. Its tail, with a dagger-shaped tip, lashes like a whip to slice and stab prey. Its enormous front legs stomp and smash, reducing prey to bits. Once it tag it's prey, it will never let go.

I talk about shrikes in my annual Halloween natural history lecture and my students are universally horrified and delighted by these tiny murderers. Fun fact: the actual shrike inspired Dan Simmons’ monster in his novel Hyperion.
