I liked spaceships as a kid: what boy didn't? Speculative science fiction stories were interesting, too: they got me thinking. But ultimately what drew me to Star Trek were the *characters*. Their wants and needs, their strengths and weaknesses, and their friendship...

Tonight's viewing: The Indian Runner (1991). Directed by Sean Penn. Starring Viggo Mortensen, David Morse, Valeria Golino.

Tonight's viewing: Kelly's Heroes (1970). Directed by Brian G. Hutton. Starring Clint Eastwood, Telly Savalas, Donald Sutherland, Don Rickles.

Tonight's viewing: Bloodsport (1988) directed by Newt Arnold. Starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Bolo Yeung, Donald Gibb. Rough, cliched, but somehow still fun as hell and charming. Sad to learn Kumite isn't real and Dux was a fraudster.

Tonight viewing: Red Heat (1988), directed by Walter Hill. Solid B-tier Schwarzenegger. Really great design and direction. Gina Gershon is luminous. Excellent bevvy of character actors here: Peter Boyle, Ed O'Ross, Pruitt Taylor Vince!, Brion James!!, Kurt Fuller (for a second), Peter Jason!

Last night's viewing: The Final Countdown (1980) directed by Don Taylor. With Martin Sheen, Kirk Douglas, and Katherine Ross. There's a lot to enjoy. But I desperately wanted a Tony Scott remake of this one. It never really sinks it's teeth in.
