Running scheme in the jvm, using erlang/otp-compatible message passing for the easiest distributed systems I am aware of for java. Otherwise javaspaces is the next best but sadly it's been retired to the apache attic.

Ah... those were the days! Object technology was in its prime-not passe, people wanted common ways describe their designs, and...well, we were worried what the future might bring. It's new for me to write and reflect on what the world was like then. Let me know what you think of my look backwards.

Yes, I used Hypercard personally and at work, Boeing Computer Services, in the day when there was a BCS and they had an AI lab. (GOFAI, symbolic expert systems). I developed on Symbolics Lisp Machines and Tek Smalltalk workstations. File xfer w/databases on Macs with a Hypercard front end for users.
