For all our measurements and unearthed facts, the shadow of the Long Neolthic extends far beyond the physical realm. For its umbra also contains stories, portals to wonder. It is told in artefacts of mystery. – Dr. K. Brophy #StandingStoneSunday

I’ll be here talking about Peggy Piggott, of Sutton Hoo fame, and the importance of writing women back in to history. 🏺| ‘Female Foundations: The Lives and Legacies of Women in the Earth Sciences’ | Dorchester, 8th March 2025 #IWD2025 | Tickets available here: www.reachequality.org/events?fbcli...

Welcome to the new Bluesky account for the Contemporary Archaeology module run by the Department of Archaeology, Durham University. This is a course where we explore the archaeology of the contemporary world in a hands-on way.

Well, well, well, well, well, well, well.

Spent an interesting hour yesterday looking through archives pertaining to the concrete dome erected over Isbister aka Tomb of the Eagles in 1988. Fascinating insights into planning meetings & bizarre materials needed to make it happen. Plus - there is a VHS! #ConcreteIsland

An ice-carried erratic boulder at Drumfad, Helensburgh near Glasgow with many well-preserved cups, rings, also modern graffiti. An attempt to break up the boulder resulted in it splitting into four unequal parts. It was preserved under the guidance of the legendary Ludovic Mann. More... 1/2

As much as the stones exist in a shared external landscape, they also exist in the inner space of our communal imagination. In both realms they are monarchs, the territories bending towards them. In one realm we may survey their height, in the other their stories. – Dr. K. Brophy #StaningStoneSunday

#StandingStoneSunday against fascism… This monolith in Vigo by Francisco Pazos, entitled 'Fiestra á liberdade', stands at the place where barricades were erected in July 1936 to oppose the military uprising against the Spanish republic, in tribute to all who gave their lives in defence of freedom

Really really disappointed with the state this path has been allowed to fall into. C’mon Glasgow… I don’t think it was intended as permanent, but it felt so fresh and innovative when it was built. A destination. Now it’s an eyesore.

One of our favourites! A private Stonehenge near Fortine, #Montana, possibly the most beautiful #Stonehenge replicas in the US and made of stones from the same quarry as the replica in Odessa, TX. It stands on a golf course at Crystal Lakes near the Stonehenge Air Museum.

Thanks Rachel Amery for this excellent feature on #WhoOwnstheClyde podcast & our petition to grant the River rights of personood www.scotsman.com/news/politic... @thescotsmanpaper.bsky.social @judebarber.bsky.social

Looking forward to this. I’ll be speaking on how we write women out of, and back in to, history.

We are officially coming off of X and focusing our efforts on fostering our archaeology community here! Please share our account around so that we can find our people! We look forward to meeting you all!🏺 #ancientbluesky #archaeology #classicsbluesky

A mountain sacred to the Maori people has been granted personhood under the laws of New Zealand. apnews.com/article/moun...

Totally agree with this. So-called trigger warnings may mean nothing to most archaeology students. But they cost nothing to do. And may well be useful for some. Media mockery of this is unhelpful and risks the wellbeing of some of our students.

I spoke to the Telegraph about threatened job cuts and site closures proposed at English Heritage. It's behind a paywall but I now have a copy of the text if you'd like to read it:

Generative #AI is already having an impact on how we perceive #archaeology🏺. In her @us.theconversation.com essay @clmorgan.bsky.social urges for critical yet constructive engagement with digital technologies in our investigation of the past. theconversation.com/how-ai-image...

Have a listen to a recent talk we did on East Lomond fort: late Roman & Pictish phases at a quite remarkable site! www.youtube.com/watch?v=KdrJ...

I wrote an article for The Conversation about generative AI visualisation in #archaeology, will discuss it further in a thread tomorrow. 🏺 theconversation.com/how-ai-image...
