No. New. PhD. Students. Direct hit on American innovation. On American competitiveness. On America.

Shutting down already installed infrastructure isn't "efficiency," it's sabotage electrek.co/2025/02/21/t...

For decades, the US government has painstakingly kept American science #1 globally—and every facet of American life has improved because of it. The internet? Flu shot? Ozempic? All grew out of federally-funded research. Now all that's being dismantled. 1/ www.technologyreview.com/2025/02/21/1...

A blatant assault on academic freedom

"We are in the midst of a global fight between Western liberal democracy and authoritarian government, and in this fight, the United States has just switched sides and signed up with the authoritarian camp." - Francis Fukuyama www.persuasion.community/p/the-ultima...

“Over the past decade, U.S. institutions worked to form a comprehensive shield against foreign interference in American politics. Over the past few weeks, the second Trump administration has turned itself to the task of undoing this project.” New from me&Quinta www.lawfaremedia.org/article/the-...

Wesleyan president: “This is an administration that is prioritizing loyalty and attacking people who stand for their own ideals and missions. That is the authoritarian playbook. If I were hiding, maybe they would never notice us. But that’s how tyranny gets instituted in a country."

Literally suing to help another authoritarian who also tried to overthrow his country's government. City on a hill no more.

It's a shame the Article I branch abdicated its powers to the Article II branch. Of course, the Article I branch could move to reclaim those powers at any time, but that's hard work so 🤷‍♂️ The key flaw in the Founders' design laid bare in the present moment: bsky.app/profile/davi...

“The bill would erase protections that public libraries and educational institutions have related to “obscene” materials. The bill would also [bar] anyone under the age of 18 from utilizing the library or its materials were it believed so-called “obscene” material were available.”

It is disturbing how the Trump regime is silencing and crippling science. We had a paleontology online seminar scheduled next week on Permian fossils and environments in Grand Canyon - but the US colleague planning to present has suddenly been sacked. climate.law.columbia.edu/Silencing-Sc...

This is a remarkable exchange and also the way journalists should consistently be framing their reporting on this. With skepticism. With insistence on proof of the assertion and specific examples of the harm caused. Too much benefit of the doubt is given, and that is antithetical to our training.

The head of the 🇺🇲 HHS Office of Climate Change and Health Equity resigned last week. "Out of an abundance of prudence and precaution, I will refrain from naming all of the amazing colleagues, supervisors, advisors, and staff I have had the privilege to work with in this post." Sign of the times

Big, growing crowd just west of the U.S. Capitol protesting Trump, Musk and DOGE on President’s Day. “Hey Congress, grow a spine,” they shout, gathering for a rally around the reflecting pool.

Let me speak to the DOGE audit language. Many people who work in both the Treasury and specifically the IRS are CPAs. Most audit firms hire CPAs. A 19yo coder has absolutely no idea how to accurately identify waste or fraud. Calling what DOGE is doing as a audit, is a flat out lie.

"Half of that cost will pass immediately to customers, thanks to a new state rule, while the other half will just pass more slowly to customers." Finally a reporter who actually says what is going on

State AGs are looking for federal workers who have just been illegally fired to stand as litigants in a new lawsuit trying to freeze further action by DOGE. DM me if that’s you and you’re interested and you’re live in one of the following states: NM, AZ, CA, CT, MD, MI, MN, NV, OR, WA, RI, or VT.

Last Fall, the Washington Post allowed a right wing group to run a full page ad falsely attacking me for protecting voting rights. Today, Bezos' paper won't accept ads criticizing Elon Musk. Support pro-democracy media. www.democracydocket.com/me-subscribe...

Rich white guys love to say “you’re not allowed to” do things that everyone is allowed to do

SCOOP: Naval Academy leaders sent an email to faculty this week that teaching about “divisive concepts” such as systemic racism + sexism is no longer permitted. Faculty also can’t talk about environmental justice or gender ideology. Our exclusive: www.thebaltimorebanner.com/education/hi...

If this were France, farmers would be blocking every highway with tractors by now, teachers would be on strike, garbage wouldn't be picked up, unions would be on strike 24/7, there would be mass protests in every city, everything would be at a standstill.

Every word of this.

FANTASTIC ICPSR at U Mich is coordinating the archiving of at-risk federal data (all of it?) You can upload data you have & search for data you don’t have www.datalumos.org/datalumos/

Easy to miss the stuff still happening in statehouses given all the national news, but this bill—which would prevent faculty from striking, set limits around topics like climate, diversity, and marriage, and force institutions into neutrality—passed the Ohio Senate last night.

This morning, Republicans finally released their scheme to gut Medicaid and give tax cuts to billionaires. Within minutes, House Democrats convened to make clear this will not stand. ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Pretty damn good framing for Dems

BREAKING: France, Germany, Poland, Italy, Spain & UK sign a joint statement vowing to protect Ukraine’s sovereignty & demanding a role in the peace talks. This is leadership. It’s also unprecedented. A western alliance is having to form against a new, twin & united threat: Trump & Putin.

“Hunger persists because we allow injustice to endure. If we are serious about ending it, we need bold political action, not just scientific breakthroughs.”

This actually IS important. Authoritarians go through great lengths to dominate culture and aesthetics. It helps them crush independent civil society and diminish opposition.

Any article about Susan Collins expressing concern owes readers a graf like this. That such grafs virtually never appear outside of places like MaddowBlog (tinyurl.com/w5x55t73) underscores that most politics reporters/outlets don't see their central task as explaining what's going on. #MEpolitics

So a couple of days ago when I suddenly stopped spending time here, it was because I saw an article saying that an order came down to remove pages about women in NASA and it set my hair on FIRE So I went straight to The Lady Astronaut series because 1. fuck you! 2. The new book is coming out soon.

Remember when the right used to say things were Orwellian

This is a choice the establishment press will have to make in ways large & small - whether to be an organ of propaganda in to preserve direct access to propagandists and liars or to be an independent source of reported information about reality that follows the facts and that it’s audience can trust

The Center for Journalism & Democracy that I founded at Howard U is launching its "Truth Over Power" training and speaker series. Up first, hands-on digital security training for journalists. Journalists: This free training will help you protect yourself & sources. docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...

This might be the most nakedly corrupt document I’ve seen on DOJ letterhead — and I wrote a history of Watergate!

"For the Army now, it's 'Blacks need not apply' and it breaks my heart." that's a quote from an ACTIVE DUTY U.S. ARMY GENERAL.

500,000 metric tons of food may have spoiled due to the agency’s destruction. My god.

Just going to keep reposting this while the deafening silence of American business leaders & conservatives about "economic uncertainty" continues, in the face of actual serious causes of economic uncertainty

Super Bowl USAID Save Foreign Aid

I wish we had pop up captions with things like this - we're not in normal times.
