Random note, in case you need some distraction from real life in the form of a show that is heartfelt and gentle and funny, A man on the inside does the job. Especially recommended for fans of the Good Place.

🌊 valentine 💝 Roses are red, The ocean is not pink But it’s still very lovely And the biggest carbon sink

In these very very bleak times my fuel is the amazing people I interact with every day. The passion and wit and brilliance that have often made me think that I have the best job in the world. I can choose to cherish moments of shared science and friendship, even as I brace for more impacts.

I feel that this doesn't even begin to describe this week

Earth, climate, and planetary scientists: If you have an expected upcoming NASA/NSF/NOAA/DOE grant payment in the next couple weeks that, if not received, will have a real impact on your lab and staff, please let us know about it @science.org. You can reach me at [email protected].

🔭🤖 First day of the semester for me! Teaching undergraduate Astro I - always a fun one - and graduate machine learning for scientists - I love it obvi but it's more challenging post-chatGPT. I now run it w/ 8 in-class mini-assignments but still finding my way. Good luck to all who start this week!

In the spirit of focusing on the positives we can control, today was a big milestone for me - I submitted a big follow-up proposal to my PIVOT fellowship. If I get it, I will be able to fund a climate data science lab and support ongoing and new collabs. Cross your fingers for me please 🙏🏼 🧪🌊

I had to get up before 🌅, but it was worth it to finally meet Dara Norman in person and get this medal for the Chambliss Astronomical Writing award at #AAS245! Please buy my now-award-winning book ok? 😀 tinyurl.com/8uudkv9n

Bundled up and en route to #AAS245!

I’ll be at #aas245 from Tuesday afternoon to Wednesday afternoon - let me know if you want to catch up and/or if I can make your talk! And if you are the morning type, come see the Chambliss astronomical writing award thingy, before the first plenary of Weds 1/15 (around 8am, I am told).

Interviewer: can you explain this gap in your resume? Me: I can’t get the floats right in LaTeX

Tons of great posters today but don’t miss this one in particular - we are developing and benchmarking custom metrics to compare climate maps that can match visual perception and are physics-aware! Early stages, but promising results and insights, and we’d love some feedback. #AGU24

Reminder!!! Come hear me today at 2.45pm if you are interested in revolutionary (ok, maybe just improved) representations for ocean data via the information imbalance! It’s fun (as far as conference talks go), free (if you already paid the mega reg fee), and short (without qualifiers)! #AGU24

I have finally, in my forties, after > 20 years of academic life, reluctantly accepted the gruesome conclusion that if you want to do a good job you have to put in a lot of effort

I had an amazingly productive work session on the train NYC -> DC for #AGU24 but then it was time for a celebratory drink and the only beer they had was Dogfish 90 minutes and so I have now spent 30 blissful minutes switching colormaps

Chat science w/ me at #AGU24! 🧪🌊 On Fri, I’ll talk of improved representations of ocean data. We use information imbalance to create custom metrics optimized to reconstruct pCO2. We get a compact space of physical vars that aid ML modeling, dim reduction, clustering, and data valuation. 1/

After over a decade of avoiding #AAS meetings because they are too big and overwhelming, today I’ll be heading to the ~8x as big #AGU2024! Follow me for more tips on how to steer your life in the direction you don’t want 😎
