Very excited to share our new paper on mixed mindset messages recently published in Motivation Science! psycnet.apa.org/doi/10.1037/... (with the fabulous @julieasievers.bsky.social @katiekroe.bsky.social and @canning.bsky.social) /1

10 important education studies in 2024 by @edutopia.org Warm demanders, AI that doesn't give answers, learning from peers, Covid's long tail and more www.edutopia.org/article/the-...

A scientist new to Bluesky? @steveharoz.com and @markrubin.bsky.social have put together some great resources to get you started!

Here's a friendly reminder that "AI" is a broad term encompassing lots of things. Machine learning and "AI" have been around along time. I suspect, in many cases, when people express concerns about "AI" they really mean "Generative AI." www.forbes.com/sites/bernar...

The first time in 14 years that I'm not able to make it to Psychonomics...already suffering severe FOMO send help

As part of an exciting new UKRI-funded interdisciplinary study of the vividness of memory, we are recruiting two post-doctoral researchers, one in cognitive neuroscience (www.jobs.cam.ac.uk/job/48823/) and one in intellectual and cultural history (www.jobs.cam.ac.uk/job/48767/). Please share!

This is a fantastic tool if you’re looking for people with overlapping interests (as judged by networks) to follow: bsky-follow-finder.theo.io

PhD application deadlines are coming up! I have compiled some general tips for applicants on my website (most relevant to mentorship model programs, esp. psych and edpsych; scroll down past the lab-specific info): sites.edb.utexas.edu/slam/prospec... Standard disclaimer: YMMV

By popular demand, Cognitive Psychology starter pack, part 2! If you are a professional conducting research in cognitive psych: Comment here if you would like to be added. If you are just interested in the topic: Open the starter pack and click "follow all" to join the convo! go.bsky.app/RgVxacV

Looks like nobody has made a Cognitive Psychology starter pack yet, so I made one! Comment to get added to the list! All things cognition are welcome. go.bsky.app/NsFhnV #AcademicSky #PsychSciSky #Psychology #CogPsych

So many new faces here, so time for a re-introduction. 👋🏻 Associate prof in ed psych, researching desirably difficult learning strategies and empowering self-regulated learners. I like being transparent about what "success" looks like, so here's my CV of failures docs.google.com/document/d/1...

Not sure if I did this right or not, but here are scholars who study motivation in educational settings, mostly affiliated with @aera-motsig.bsky.social and @aeraedresearch.bsky.social go.bsky.app/3PuVgdT

If you've found yourself making impassioned arguments like "There's no evidence for learning styles and there are better ways to differentiate" or "Learning is more than just a cognitive process" then you may be Learning Scholar! Want to be added to this starter pack? Contact me! go.bsky.app/CBPm1dV

Another new paper to share where we identified different patterns in students' beliefs about challenge: authors.elsevier.com/a/1jqda3irP4... with awesome co-authors Shengjie Lin, Luke Rutten, Cameron Hecht, & Veronica Yan (@veronicayan.bsky.social)!

Do you think psychologists should help shape education policy? That the science of learning should contribute to training teachers, shaping curriculum & adopting technology? Apply for this open rank faculty position @TheLBJSchool, @UTAustin: apply.interfolio.com/151348

Losing Google Scholar would be a huge problem for me, because plain internet search, already degraded, looks like it's going to be contaminated w/shitty AI & otherwise it's about getting access to proprietary databases or ????

When asked who is an expert in their field, men #psychology researchers name significantly fewer women than their women colleagues do. This has implications for the gender gap. More in my new story for Science. With @veronicayan.bsky.social  www.science.org/content/arti...

New paper! Difficulty mindsets have prev. been studied wrt motivation for goals (as imposs., as valuable). They also matter for how you choose to reach goal (exercise, weight, academic)—taking the easy or the effortful route. www.tandfonline.com/eprint/3TTFY... #psychsciski #edusky

A must-read by Dr @schu.etze.co: link.springer.com/article/10.1... Integrating cog, metacog, and socio-motivational perspectives on self-regulated learning, the model casts a new lens on heterogenous effects in ed interventions w/ implications for tailoring interventions #psychscisky #edusky

Reviewer unable to read nuance in my submitted manuscript: "I think chatGPT wrote this" 🤬

Why did it take this long?!?!

a big thing for the very clever contrarian boys has long been what does *diversity* have to do with *science*?!?! anyway this is the 101-level answer

For those who are hitting a paywall, the preprint is here: osf.io/preprints/ps...

Bucket list item checked off: Publish a scientific paper with a Taylor Swift song as the title ✅ So proud of this work led by @veronicayan.bsky.social and co-authored with Marlone Henderson on the gender gap in psychology just published in American Psychologist! dx.doi.org/10.1037/amp0...

Nature Human Behaviour joins Psych Science, the first two journals that publish Psych papers that will be part of @i4replication.bsky.social ‘s replication games. Sign up if you want to be part of the replicating team!

hi #psychscisky #neuroskyence I will be hiring a postdoc in 2024, to work on auditory perception here in Auckland NZ 🇳🇿 info about the lab at themusiclab.org apply at tinyurl.com/musiclab-pos...

Are you interested in whether your treatment condition is "moderated" or "interacts" with other manipulated or measured variables? There's a lot of surprising ways in which this seemingly simple analysis can go wrong! Paul von Hippel and I just posted a draft of our preprint on this topic below.

New pub with @pcarvalho.bsky.social and Faria Sana in Policy Insights from the Behavioral and Brain Sciences, "No Simple Solutions to Complex Problems: Cognitive Science Principles Can Guide but Not Prescribe Educational Decisions" (1/2) journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/... #psycscisky #edusky

What Giorgia Lupi has and is going through with Long Covid is horrendous, I am so sorry for her facing all this. In this piece for New York Timed she reflects on her experience with her typically exquisite flair www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

If we support pre-registration, we should look at the pre-registration when reviewing a paper 🙏. Even without reading the whole thing in detail, just spot checking whether the primary analyses highlighted in the paper were registered exactly as conducted can reveal a lot. #metasci #statssky

Most papers comparing clustered data methods use biostat/econ language, so I tried to write one using psyc/ed language that covers the origin of the independence assumption, how each method handles ind. violations, and types of questions best-suited for each method psycnet.apa.org/record/2024-...

Read this. There is a lot of fear of too much criticism in psychology, talk of protecting ECRs from this threat, etc. What about protecting ECRs from the damage of being silenced or worse when they raise legitimate criticism of famous people’s work? https://www.theorgplumber.com/posts/statement/

🚨 New preprint with Gulnaz Kiper & Daphna Oyserman: Given a goal, what strategies do ppl prefer -- the easy route or the more effortful one? For both physical and academic goals, beliefs about difficulty matter for ppl's perception of strategies (efficacy, likelihood of using). #psychscisky #edusky

🚨 New preprint with @schu.etze.co & @stephanyrea.bsky.social In this paper, we lay out ways in which instructors might be able to support students' use of effective, but difficult, learning strategies both in and out of the classroom and directions for future research. #psychscisky #edusky

Late 1900s 💀 But the 1990s were just 10 years ago...right?

Didn't expect my fortune cookie to have such a strong theoretical stance on memory encoding #cogpsych #psychscisky
