I'm a writer. I don't believe in voices for the voiceless. Abolish the conditions of voicelessness instead. Books include The Sympathizer, The Committed, A Man of Two Faces, The Refugees, and the forthcoming To Save and to Destroy: Writing as an Other.

Trump and Musk are already basically shutting down the government, so why some Democrats are reluctant to shut down the government when it comes to the budget is beyond me.

Firing a highly qualified Black man and hiring lots and lots of completely unqualified and underqualified white men and women (and at least one South Asian man) is DEI for white people (and those Asians who want to be white adjacent).

I bought a Costco membership

Free choice in the United States: you get to choose your method of execution. “South Carolina now directs those on death row to choose how they will be killed – electric chair, lethal injection or shooting. If they decline to make a selection, the state electrocutes them.”

I always thought the Trojans were kind of dumb when they saw a big wooden horse outside the gates of Troy and thought it was a good idea to bring it in. The USA is a real life example of welcoming a Trojan Horse.

Not climate catastrophe, not radical income inequality, but immigrants are the greatest threat. And the sad thing is that mass deportations enjoy a majority approval rating in the USA. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

Those who are saying that the United States is now a lawless state have not been paying attention. Supporting the lawless Israel as it committed genocide is only the most recent example. Europeans are only shocked that this lawlessness is now being applied to them.

I'm still doing my fundraiser for LA fire victims. 20 out of 30 books have been bought for $100 each, all going to the victims. I'll match all donations. 4 copies left each of The Committed and A Man of Two Faces, and 2 copies of Simone.

Failing to defend students protesting against genocide won’t save you, universities and presidents. It’s best to fight back and stand on ALL your principles because Trump and MAGA really hate you and are just using antisemitism as an excuse.

Can't wait to see the lineup for the next Kennedy honors.

Come hear me, scholar/writer Lan Duong & memoirist Mai Elliott talk about the 50th anniversary of the end of the war in Viet Nam, especially in terms of a future of liberation. Plus artist Ann Le & a preview of the landmark anthology "The Cleaving: Vietnamese Writers in the Diaspora.” Link below.

Democrats who thought they could embrace diversity and multiculturalism while endorsing drone strikes and refusing to stop aiding Israel do not get a pass. Neither do writers of benign multicultural literature. Talking about "craft" in "workshop" is not enough. 1/2

"Donald Trump is an anti-literary president. It’s clear that the man doesn’t read, outside of highly diluted briefings and tweets. He’s missing a core element needed for literature: empathy." Wrote this in 2020, still true today. We are in a culture war. www.nytimes.com/2020/12/22/o...

The USA wants to be 19th century country in a 21st century world.

Bao Phi is a spoken word legend and also an amazing poet. He’s turning 50 and gifting the Diasporic Vietnamese Artists Network with a birthday party/poetry reading/fundraiser! Check out the lineup of incredible poets. Event at this link: www.eventbrite.com/e/reaching-5...

Do people know how much it costs to use a military plane to deport people?!!!! The same amount it costs to send US troops on imperial missions.

Small victories also matter: “It is justice. It is karmic,” said Rev. William H. Lamar IV, the church’s pastor. “It is our victory in a long line of victories,” he added, and part of “our unbroken, joyful resistance.” He said the church “will not be silent when violence is perpetrated against us.”

It’s all a part of the same continuum. Genocide & ethnic cleansing from Gaza to the West Bank, silencing of Palestinians & their allies, resegregation, incarceration, and deportation, erasure of trans people. That’s why those who resist have to draw the line at every single moment—no exceptions.

Franz Kafka’s THE TRIAL and AMERIKA meet as the US sends migrants to Guantanamo. Migrants treated as criminals aka terrorists, detained without trial in the continuing theater of punishment and cruelty that is Trump’s USA. www.wsj.com/politics/pol...

Students and faculty got arrested and put their careers on the line protesting genocide. I want to see some Democratic officials getting arrested to protect democracy.

It’s very funny that some of the people most vocal in telling me to love it or leave it are other Vietnamese Americans. The mental colonization is strong.

Can other nations please boycott the USA? We really need it

A couple of years ago I saw a young Asian American woman pilot my American Airlines plane. I had never seen such a sight before. I was so proud.

I’m not in the USA right now and I’m just going to enjoy it

it's been a lot easier for me to renounce Catholicism than capitalism

Trump doesn’t like poor white people

If you're lucky enough to be in Cartagena, Colombia, on 1/31 and 2/1, I hope to see you at one of my events for the Hay Festival, one of the great international literary festivals. I've been lucky to be a part of it in Hay-on-Wye, Wales; Dallas, Texas; Querétaro, Mexico; and now Cartagena (1/3)

Finally finished it! Incredible! Thank you @vietthanhnguyen.bsky.social #TheSympathizer

Maybe watching a live and online genocide was so overwhelming I don’t feel that overwhelmed right now. The storm blowing over Gaza has simply turned around and we Americans are feeling the blowback. Racism, colonialism, capitalism, patriarchy, and transphobia are all part of the same storm system.

It seems like a very American thing to buy Costco membership as an act of political commitment

This was such a good interview @vietthanhnguyen.bsky.social It made me think back to how much was missing from my high school education (2001-2005) about Vietnam specifically & American wars generally, right as we started two new ones. Listen here: pca.st/episode/ef2c... from @pocketcasts.com

John Freeman is one of the best interlocutors out there for literature and culture, and I am so pleased to be in conversation with him for Alta Journal's California Book Club on January 28. There will be a couple of special guests, too!

We’re all living in his Kafkaesque world, but remember that these tactics are deployed first against the most vulnerable, including refugees, migrants, and prisoners, from domestic prisons to Guantanamo, as well as those subject to war and genocide in the name of freedom and democracy.
