One of the biggest reasons people are not successful seeing the aurora is that they go to bed too early. One of the best ways to see the northern lights is just to stay up all night and watch the sky. It's that simple sometimes.

The aurora isn’t just green…

Welcome to the Dalton Highway in Alaska. Filmed in March 2023

Solar wind is currently being enhanced by a CME (most likely), and high-latitudes should be on alert tonight! Substorms may push views to mid-latitudes, so monitor GOES mag, AE index, and ground magnetometers. #heliophysics

Quick visit in Wisconsin to see my parents, Cheeto, and Lola! I had an overnight layover at MSP, and I’m on my way to Fairbanks now!

Lol

AR 4001 fired off an X2 flare today from the west-limb. There was an associated CME that will likely have no impact at Earth. #heliophysics

Excited to say I’ll be returning to Venetie, Alaska for another rocket campaign next month! Venetie is above the Arctic Circle and a great place to view the aurora from. This time, I may be there for up to three weeks. Very excited, but definitely will be feeling the isolation after that much time 🥲

Nice clear skies in Fairbanks! Just need the aurora to join the party :) theauroraguy.com/pages/webcams

It’s not all about size. This long duration #SolarFlare was small in magnitude (a C-class event), yet produced a beautiful eruption, high altitude downflows, and hypnotic flare loop growth. Stunning!

Only that one thing is worth it…..

More snaps from the food diaries in Melbourne!

Last day in Melbourne today! I can’t wait to be returning to Alaska!

The mystery of the aurora borealis

Mythic view while using the bathroom above the Arctic circle in Alaska

Bright, red aurora is now visible in Maine! All states along the U.S./Canada border should be ready to go tonight. We are in the substorm growth phase, so a big explosion of aurora may be coming soon. theauroraguy.com/pages/webcams #heliophysics

Heads up aurora chasers in the along the U.S./Canada border! Current solar wind conditions support seeing auroras at your latitude, especially during substorms. Check webcams and GOES mag tonight to monitor conditions in real-time. #heliophysics

Thank you all for the support on this post! 16,000 likes is incredible. So grateful :)

Heads up aurora chasers! Looks like we are under the effect of a CME now. B_z has been pinned south for a few hours, and the auroral oval may expand equatorward with substorms pushing horizon views to mid-latitudes. Keep an eye out! Watch live: theauroraguy.com/pages/webcams

When you’re 30 miles north of the Arctic circle in Alaska at night you’re in for a good aurora

Over the weekend, we saw a nice-sized CME from the Sun’s south pole! It’s been a while since we’ve seen a similar-sized CME heading our way, although coronal holes have provided us with some nice geomagnetic activity this week instead. #spaceweather

I’m hopefully headed to Toolik Field Station next month! Can’t wait to drive over that :)

It’s crazy to me how people think the aurora doesn’t actually have color and all the photos you see are “photoshopped…” 🙄

Breakfast this morning in Melbourne :)

Seeing the aurora outside your front door is next-level

Perfect example of a growth-phase arc is now visible in Fairbanks, Alaska. Awesome! We all know what comes next in the substorm sequence 👀 theauroraguy.com/pages/webcams

This is insane…

The aurora right above me

Beautiful auroras on Maia’s tour last night! Check out all these happy guests :) so thankful to be partnered with guides like Maia who are pros at what they do!

Just wanted to share this insane real-time video of the aurora Maia sent me last night during her tour. She drove guests to around Salcha, Alaska to escape a cloudy Fairbanks. Check out the real-time motion here, just crazy! High speed streams do wonders for high-latitudes. :)

Fiji or Fairbanks. I know what I’d choose…

In case you’re wondering what the heck I’m doing in Australia today, I’m actually here for an American Geophysical Union conference on particle precipitation that will be going on for one week. This includes auroral precipitation and auroral phenomena!

Here’s a little aurora to cleanse your feed…

Food adventures in Melbourne today!

Heloooo from Melbourne! Excited to be here for the next week. About to take a quick power nap then head out, anything I should see? I’m staying downtown. Will also do my own research, but if any locals/travelers want to chime in, it’s always appreciated!

Wouldn’t it be funny if I saw the southern lights this week? 😂 (On the way to Melbourne now)

Heads up aurora chasers! The G1 (Minor) geomagnetic Storm Watch issued for Feb 14, 2025 has been extended through Feb 15. The high speed stream continues to influence Earth. G1 (Minor) storm levels are likely to extend through Feb 15, 2025. #heliophysics

Aurora data not looking too bad for some mid-latitude glow in Europe right now. Scotland could be in play tonight! Check it out: theauroraguy.com/pages/webcams #heliophysics
