“Gene Hackman was a virtuoso of the smile. When the corners of his mouth curled up, this split-second pause before the unveiling told you something thrilling was about to happen, but he was so inventive that you never knew quite what.” www.vulture.com/article/gene...

Please look up the influenza epidemic of 1918-19 to understand that the CDC not selecting strains for next year’s vaccines sets the stage for a public health calamity that will, without doubt and at bare minimum, catastrophically and directly impact people you know. This is a five alarm fire.

Tesla lost enough value today that it could have fully funded USAID for a year.

Today I donated to @polarbearsintl.bsky.social and attended my first (but not last) city council meeting. Great presentation on improving the city’s tree canopy and climate resilience!

Well done to Congressman Maxwell Frost for fearlessly speaking truth to power today in a session of Congress whilst being both threatened and silenced by corrupt scumbag James Comer. More of this.

see you there #teslatakedown #boston

I just called the RI DoH immunization department to ask what they are doing to protect our vaccines. They promise to call me back within 48-72 hours. @samuelwbell.bsky.social @davidmoralesri.bsky.social any other recommendations here? RI needs to hold the line here.

Everything is abjectly terrible but I am ecstatic at the prospect of seeing Memorials, an absolutely thrilling live band.

Announcing now - 61 shows / 7 reissued albums / 7 official shirts. All are on sale tomorrow. stereolab.ffm.to/2lpreissues

Gene Hackman (1930-2025) 💔

I wrote a blog post and Jen dropped a line to see if she could turn it into a print and omfg I said yes so fast.

Just a reminder that masks are a great way to reduce the risk of Covid, flu, and the common cold!

My mom is 91. The thought that she won’t be able to be properly vaccinated later this year for preventable illnesses is terrifying.

The first measles death in the US in a decade -- the tragic, preventable death of a child whose parents chose not to protect them with vaccination -- should spark an immediate nation-wide campaign to ensure all children are protected against preventable diseases. Anything less is unconscionable.

Dreaming out loud for Providence: 1) areas where cars are forbidden 2) interconnected parks, public squares and walks 3) Boost our farmlands (outdoor & greenhouses) and shorten our supply chains 4) Free seed programs for locals 5) Eliminate grass in favor of pollinator-friendly ground cover

Everything is a dumpster fire right now, but plus side: my Christmas cactus is in bloom!

Super excited to be lending a hand to @reversediorama.bsky.social as he launches a brilliant collection of his music writing - Volcanic Tongue. We'll be in conversation and I'll be playing records too alongside DK and Ribeka. And Richard Youngs (live). 6 March 2025. McCuhills. shorturl.at/0mFeH

I’ve started documenting each day of this insanity & my reactions to it. It’s hard not to despair over the amount of damage being done in such a short span of time. Today I started crying watching video of a polar bear mother & cubs—how much longer will they be able to live on our warming earth?

The Trump administration is waging a full-on attack on #EnvironmentalJustice (EJ) work in the federal government. This means that the lived experience of so many overburdened communities—primarily low income communities and communities of color— are being ignored and set aside. Learn more:

The Sword-billed Hummingbird is the only bird with a beak longer than its body! 😲⚔️ Found in the Andes from Venezuela through to Bolivia, it uses its long bill to feed on nectar from long-tubed flowers. 🏔️ By doing so, it plays a vital role in the ecosystem, pollinating rare high-altitude plants. 🌸

Vermilion flycatcher🪶 📷 Alameda Creek This bird, which is rare for the Bay Area, was spotted in last year's Christmas Bird Count. No one has seen it for 7 weeks, and a lot of folks have looked. And then it just showed up in the same spot 2 days ago.

U.S. Representatives Seth Magaziner and Gabe Amo speak out at Indivisible RI’s Fight Back and Give Back rally "Donald Trump and Elon Musk are doing this to make themselves richer because no money is enough to fill the hole these little men have inside them..."

I think people both within science and outside science don’t fully appreciate the miracle that were the Covid-19 vaccines. How much courage it took to get the sequence out, how much work had already gone into figuring out the best viral antigen and how best to present it. 1/

The AMS is temporarily opening its career services to all who need them, regardless of membership status, and offering dues waivers and meeting registration fee reductions for those impacted by job loss due to changes in the government. Read more: bit.ly/4gRiHAk

I want to see every scientific society going into emergency mode. This is a good example of how an organization can flex its specific power in a time of great need. What else is possible?

More photos from the Fight Back and Give Back Rally at the R.I. Statehouse today. We were inspired to unite and act! Donations were made to the R.I. Food Bank.

It was a beautiful day to protest musk/trump’s illegal freeze of federal money to Rhode Island and to collect food for RI Food Bank. Thanks to @indivisibleri.bsky.social, to our reps Amo and Magaziner, to all the state legislators and the thousands of people who showed up.

Celebrated Edward Gorey’s centenary at the very odd and wonderful Knight Library, a new bar in Olneyville (next to the Dirt Palace). All my photos came out very badly, so here is a photo of the very cool bar, skeleton & all.
