here is my new article on mad men, real estate, the past, the future (open access!): www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.... this is part of an upcoming special issue of rethinking history on "memories of the future" edited by louis bayman and tim vermeulen

The European Commission's DG CONNECT has several open positions to strengthen their Digital Services Act enforcement team. Profile 5 may be particularly interesting for academic researchers. For more information: digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/news/join... #DSA #JOB

Netflix launches a test balloon for fighting European regulations, perhaps hoping for a presidential intervention? Either way, the timing is interesting given the CNC's victory lap earlier in the week when it announced the surge in platform investment. (1) variety.com/2025/film/gl...

Germany's incoming Chancellor has promised a "French-style" investment requirement for streamers working in the country of "up to 25%". This is welcome news, but let's hope it includes IP retention requirements! www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie...

Meanwhile, it is a boom time in French cinema with production near an all-time high, local market-share the envy of Europe and effective policy measures compelling the streamers to invest in films specifically. Truly a model for the continent.

😂 Mike Hopkins is wasting no time crafting a narrative about why Salke had to go. www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/c...

Compiling my monthly Netflix original film count for my records and it occurs to me that April 2025 may be the first month since 2016 in which Netflix has not released a single American-made fiction film (Havoc is a British-made film). Latest sign of a major strategy shift it seems to me.

Little concrete info, but a handy summary of the Hollywood gossip surrounding Salke's "departure" from Amazon. www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/bus...

Coincidentally - or not - with the firing of Salke is a Variety story about how the Russo brothers have squandered 100s of millions of streamer dollars on content that has been mediocre and forgettable at the best of times. variety.com/lists/russo-...

Huge news in the streaming world as Salke is out at Amazon. The new org chart has Valenti heading films at APV and Sanders leading series/"TV", with both reporting to Mike Hopkins. (1) deadline.com/2025/03/jenn...

🚨Japanese convenience stores are endlessly fascinating. They are also precursors to platforms in Asia as I show in this newly published article. I've been researching this lineage for years and am thrilled to share -out in Social Media + Society now! 🚨 journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

For those interested in "BVOD" and public service media, an interesting data disclosure from Televisión Española that shows the co.'s platform had 4.7 mil unique users last week, about 10% of the country's population. www.audiovisual451.com/rtve-play-lo...

Amazon is looking to another Wattpad novel as the basis of a trilogy of YA-oriented films, this time in Italy. Tellingly, it's all being announced at Series Mania. deadline.com/2025/03/prim...

Some insights into Max's strategies in Poland - including use of WBD's linear network there - as well as a window into the national market, which is turning into an underrated battle front in the 'streaming wars.' deadline.com/2025/03/max-...

I have nine publications on LibGen. Does that count as impact?

RTL's annual results are out. How's the quest for a European Netflix going? Subs are up 21% across its 3 country footprint to just under 7 million. The group projects profitability for this part of the business by 2026. (1) www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/bus...

No earth-shaking revelations in this laudatory interview with Ted Sarandos, but some interesting claims, e.g. The Defenders universe was a bigger deal than House of Cards; Amazon is not really a competitor for top projects, etc. variety.com/2025/film/ne...

A comically overstated headline - the difference turns out be literally 1 cent per view - but otherwise a lot of inights intot the economics of Netflix original films. www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/bus...

The Russos’ reportedly $320 million sci-fi fantasy #TheElecticState, starring Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt, nabbed a low (for Netflix, compared to Red Notice, Carry-On, The Grey Man, Enola Holmes, Damsel, and at least two Lindsay Lohan rom-coms) 25 million views in its Fri-Sun debut...

New, and characteristically rigorous, report from @filmsdelover.bsky.social and @whatsonnetflix.bsky.social looking into the question of the seeming ephemerality of Netflix original movies (the American ones anyway, but still, interesting stuff!). www.whats-on-netflix.com/news/do-netf...

Very telling that every interview with the Russos on the press tour for The Electric State turns into a conversation about the Avengers movies. They are just absolutely fleecing Netflix and to a lesser extent Amazon. www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie...

Interesting interview with Verónica Fernández, from Netflix España. Although she also oversees series, the focus is on films made and licensed by Nflix. Lots of talk of specific films and some interesting factoids, e.g. users watch on average 7 films per month. www.audiovisual451.com/veronica-fer...

I’m happy to share that my most recent essay, “Toward a Theory of Surplus Blackness” is out now in International Journal of Communication. This essay is an attempt to think through the relationship between Black audiences and media industries. ijoc.org/index.php/ij...

Just like that the Obamas are producing for Amazon as well. Interesting for Netflixers changing sides (see Scott Stuber for example) but also now APV has projects with the Trumps and the Obamas on the go. www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie...

More collaboration with the Trump administration from Amazon Prime Video. www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/d...

Amazon will be rolling out a Prime Video linear channel in Germany in April. At least part of the reason is said to be to increase content discoverability. www.broadbandtvnews.com/2025/02/26/a...

Not much in the way of news in this splashy "deep dive" from THR, but one revealing anecdote - revealing of EON as well as Amzn - is that Broccoli supposedly lost it when Salke referred to the Bond films as "content." www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie...

Very happy to share that Is it French? Popular Postnational Screen Fiction from France - a book to which I contributed a chapter - has been shortlisted for Best Edited Collection at this year's BAFTSS conference! It's also in OA, check it out here: link.springer.com/book/10.1007...

Some viewership anecdotes - without specific numbers of course - from SkyShowtime! Over 25% of viewers watched The Jackal and Europe is even bigger on Taylor Sheridan than Americans are, apparently. Some local anecdotes to be found as well. deadline.com/2025/03/yell...

Canal+'s annual report is out, its first as a stand alone company and its headline number is now subscribers, showing that it - to paraphrase Reed Hastings - looking to become Netflix long after Netflix became C+. (1) www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/bus...
