It's a digital world but people need in-person contact more than ever. We're delighted that the first @CityWestminster Community Hub is almost ready. Expect lunch-clubs, coffee mornings and advice services at Ernest Harriss House on Elgin Avenue. westminster.gov.uk/news/flagshi...

We love the canal and are serious about investing in our canal side. The latest @CityWestminster project is a commission for some public art for Halfpenny Steps on Harrow Road. Please forward to any good artists who might be interested. npcanalsidestrategy.commonplace.is/en-GB/propos...

he builders haven't finished with the refurb but the former House of Fraser has signed its first tenant. Vacancy rates on Oxford Street are now well below pre-pandemic levels. news.completelyretail.co.uk/former-oxfor...

Don't be shy to report graffiti to @CityWestminster. We've a 12 hour turnaround to remove anything offensive and clean more than 400 a month in all. londonnewsonline.co.uk/news/council...

There are 10,000 commercial kitchens in @CityWestminster which are major generators of PM2.5 particulates. We're setting up a project to start monitoring indoor air quality in restaurants. Drop me an email if you'd like to take part. www.ukauthority.com/articles/wes...

The super-sewer is connected at last! It's a huge tunnel under the Thames that will stop sewage flushing directly into the river when we get heavy rain. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Very interesting story about Lime Bikes from @londoncentric.media, one of the newsletters changing the face of the capital's media. www.londoncentric.media/p/lime-ebike...

Want to start your own business? We've got a free course for Westminster residents beginning next week delivered by Rebel Business School. You don't need money or a formal business plan but you do need energy and commitment. therebelschool.com/westminster/

We're serious about good growth in central London which is why the @citywestminster.bsky.social stminster Sustainable City Charter- a joint initiative with @TheWPA and now signed by over 70 businesses and landowners - is so important. Here @colicciuk explain why: youtu.be/_0OZ3sUIajQ?...

We're serious about connecting our residents with the great jobs in the West End so I was delighted to host IKEA for a recruitment event at City Hall. The retailer made 100 job offers to local people at London Living Wage for the new Oxford Circus store. We get things done.

www.standard.co.uk/news/london/... The Conservatives turned off the councils’s CCTV in 2016. Labour now brings another 100 cameras across @CityWestminster. We get things done.

It's true. Connected London Wifi is faster than cellular and you only need to download the profile once to automatically connect. 51 sites are already live in @CityWestminster. www.thelondonspy.co.uk/p/we-tested-...

I've been on a podcast. Make a cup of tea first, it's quite a long one. There's lots to talk about. conciliocomms.com/discussion-o...

Mobile phone reception in central London isn't good enough. That's why we're launching Connected London Wifi - a new service that connects you to public space Wifi with a single sign-on. @CityWestminster street markets and libraries are first. youtu.be/aYKfehWtxik?...

Yay. It’s the first daffodil of spring in Paddington Rec.

Mango to open a second store on Oxford Street as part of the Spanish retailer's global expansion. The latest one is a "flagship" so business must be good. www.retailgazette.co.uk/blog/2025/01...

I'd like to ban pedicabs but I'll settle for background checks, driving licenses, a published tariff AND NO MUSIC. www.standard.co.uk/news/london/...

Yay. First crocus of the year at Paddington Rec. #springwatch

A major deliverable from the @CityWestminster Retrofit Taskforce is this Heritage Partnership Agreement with de Walden covering 317 listed buildings in Marylebone, including insulation, secondary glazing, drainpipes etc. Good for the planet & good for growth. Full doc below. ⬇️

Wonderful to see so many people at Maida Hill for the unveiling of the Joe Strummer plaque. Good work from the @cityofwestminster team.

The works on Elgin Avenue are coming on nicely. More trees, a more accessible taxi rank and safer cycling.

Good to see Maida Hill getting a thorough clean ready for tomorrow’s Joe Strummer celebration.

www.theguardian.com/business/nil... 100% agree. There should be no taxpayer bail-out for @thameswater. Get the business into special administration and then recapitalise with a stock market float.

Love these old photos from Clifton Villas, Formosa Street & Bristol Gardens in the 70s. You rarely see a horse and cart these days. flashbak.com/maida-vale-l...

There's a bit of a party coming. On Saturday afternoon @westminstercouncil is celebrating the relaying of the Joe Strummer plaque at Maida Hill. Expect music. www.eventbrite.com/e/london-cal...

The world premiere of Gerry's Pompeii is on Tuesday. It's a film celebrating the genius of Gerry Dalton who brought us the strange sculpture garden by the canal opposite Meanwhile Gardens. Tickets just £10. www.gerryspompeii.com

Terrific long post about why skyscrapers became glass boxes www.construction-physics.com/p/why-skyscr...

Confidence is flooding back to the West End and the openings are coming thick and fast. A warm welcome to Carhatt, Ronning, Blackhorse Lane Ateliers and Charlotte Tilbury. www.retailgazette.co.uk/blog/2025/01...

Good win for these renters, claiming £20K back rent (with help from @CityWestminster officers) from a landlord that had no HMO licence and had "exposed the applicants to dangerous living conditions”. www.standard.co.uk/news/politic...

We know it’s been a tough winter around Victoria, which is why Westminster Council has launched and deployed a new 6 Street Based Intervention Team of city inspectors and rough sleeping coordinators to tackle drug dealing and abuse to help in the area www.westminsterlabour.org.uk/issues/crime...

We love our high streets. That's why @citywestminster.bsky.social is busy improving shopfronts on Harrow Road. The first two are underway at Lux Blinds & Hales Jewellers. 11 more follow soon.

We've set up a new unit to tackle aggressive begging, street drinking and drug taking, taking advantage of our 100 new CCTV cameras. Their first mission is to clean up Victoria. www.standard.co.uk/news/politic...

Delighted to join @adamhug.bsky.social at the launch of Highstreets UK at the Houses of Parliament last night. This is an important initiative from BIDs in major British cities (including NWEC & HOLBA) to give a strong, national voice to town centre traders. high-streets.co.uk

A pleasure to visit New Zealand House yesterday with @thecrownestate.bsky.social. It's a massive retrofit project of a landmark, listed 1960s block which keeps 90% of the structure. The High Commissioner gets a flat at the top with one of the best views in London.

Good to see contractors at work on Elgin Avenue. They are installing a new central median with three new street trees. The taxi parking moves to outside the shops and we get pay-by-phone parking in the middle.

Big announcement today. Labour-run Westminster making residents safer www.youtube.com/watch?v=oMR5...

We're all very pleased about this. @CityWestminster Children's Services rated "outstanding" yet again. www.standard.co.uk/news/politic...

I know we in Labour are against one-word Ofsted judgments but it appears they had only one word for children's services in Labour-run Westminster City Council

Here's another good retrofit in @CityWestminster. The former Army & Navy warehouse off Victoria Street repurposed with 80% fabric retention and 50% reduction in carbon emissions. www.bdonline.co.uk/news/spparc-...

Oxford Street is back, folks. The latest global brand investing big on the nation's high street is Abercrombie & Fitch with a bookable, private mezzanine lounge and personal fitting room. us.fashionnetwork.com/news/Abercro...

At @CityWestminster we're already saving time and money with artificial intelligence. Upload a photo of flytipped rubbish or graffiti and the robots automatically geolocate and put the job into the workflow of the waste contractor. Give it a try today. www.westminster.gov.uk/report-it
