This is insane. Republicans have inserted language into the budget reconciliation bill that would ban states from regulating AI in any capacity for 10 years. from @404media.co www.404media.co/republicans-...

I’m one of those dodgy immigrants who came here on a spouse visa and got indefinite leave to remain after 12 months. The incalculable harm I have done to the UK includes dedicating my life to public service, educating thousands of British young people, and paying more tax than I’ll ever get back.

A comprehensive comms success.

This won't have much impact on net migration, but will hinder integration, promote "churn", and increase hardship. Mean-spirited, unnecessary, and unpopular. www.ft.com/content/f844...

It's been clear for some time now the direction that Keir Starmer's government has been going in on immigration, despite some people denying it at the time. Here's what I wrote back in February www.adambienkov.co.uk/p/keir-starm...

Interesting move. Nice that at least one party wants to challenge Reform rather than dance to their tune.

Can't defend a government that lies like this.

In microcosm, this is why “fund defence spending with an aid cut” is really stupid. What is your strategy to prevail in these conflicts if not through funding something like the World Service in addition to your hard power?

Well, there goes the "The match going fans know better" argument

Well done to Liverpool Pride for ending their partnership with Barclays after Barclays said it would ban trans employees from the toilet www.lcrpride.co.uk/2025/05/08/l...

Why are they booing Thomas Partey? #livars

Also mathematically a silly argument on its own terms - weak economic growth rates could have been weaker still, or even negative, without immigration

Every interview with Yvette Cooper

Imagine being Yvette Cooper, someone who has been in government before. Waiting all these years to regain power to play the part of hateful to migrants placeholder.

For anyone who's just seen Yvette Cooper talking about the immigration white paper, I set out some of the evidence and facts here. [1/?] www.independent.co.uk/voices/tight...

Farage’s immigration hysteria is now setting Labour’s agenda. I’m seriously doubtful - to put it mildly - of the political wisdom of accepting and amplifying Reform’s migration myths 👇🏻

I guess it would be too much for them to ask whether it would improve the country rather than whether it will win votes. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Letting unis go bust will be popular with voters right up until the economic and societal affects hit them square in the face. This is exactly why outsourcing politics to focus groups and those who cannot adjust from campaigning to governing is disastrous.

If you’re anywhere near West London, the Hanwell Hootie, an incredible celebration of live music across multiple venues, is just getting underway. Free & fantastic. (And the Golden Chip is a magnificent chippy.) #HanwellHootie

This is, imv, really good. From the conclusion: The government 'is unwilling to lead. It is unprepared to make the argument. It does not have the courage to state clearly what is happening, what it wants and how it will get there'.

The debate on healthcare, like pensions, runs into an incredible brick wall over the statement: "I've paid taxes all my life". To which the honest response is: yes, you have. But those taxes were at a rate far too low to provide the level of service British pensioners now expect.

'Giving equal weight to people who lie or mislead and people intent on presenting facts may superficially look like impartiality. But this model, in effect, takes the side of the lies, because truth is not the midpoint between a fact and a lie.' Patrick Howse via Byline Times bylinetimes.com/2025...

A reminder that when the Sycamore Gap tree was cut down people immediately started blaming immigrants and teenagers... It was neither. It was two white Englishmen in their 30s.

Starmer had pledged to end the “outrageous way government departments refuse freedom of information requests”.

But this manifestly isn't a way to "counter" Reform. It's just an endorsement of Reform. If it's what Glasman believes, then he should simply join Reform. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Ending double taxation of Indians here on temporary work visas just as we do for many other countries (including US, EU, etc) is "two-tier taxation". Ignorance, racism, cynical opportunism, or all three?

Can you imagine if Biden had said something like this? They would have demanded the 25th Amendment was acivated right there and then. Basically, "by destroying the economy I have saved people and businesses from having to buy and sell stuff". ~AA

Ask people in these accursed vox pops. a) How many immigrants are there? b) How much lower (reasonably) would you like this? Ask people. Because they will wildly over"estimate" a) and b) is probably what we are close to.

An absolute masterclass in how the UK media platforms and normalises far right politics. This is how Farage wins.

A critical point in today's post. A lot of people assume that Labour places going Reform mean Labour voters are going Reform. But it doesn't.

Affluent, adjacent to London. Posh Spice is from here. Hardly the left behind patriotic working class.

"Since the election, Labour has lost more than three times as many voters to the Lib Dems as to Reform" (Rachel Sylvester writes in the Observer today). They don't act like they are concerned about *those* lost votes

Killing off the university sector once and for all for a politcal battleground which Labour will never win… instead of reclassifying the immigration statistics as we always should have to reflect the fact the vast majority of foreign students leave the UK. Stupid. Unserious. Utterly self-defeating.

Is this the same Kemi Badenoch that spread a false race-baiting claim circulated by a far right extremist about the series Adolescence?

There’s something really disturbing to me about the way the media, and indeed her own mother, continue to talk about Brianna Ghey - a constant focus on publicising her mental health, as if she’d committed suicide, and never focusing on the transphobia that actually led to her horrific murder.

There is an idealised Proper Working Class, who is heavily implied to be straight, white, working in manual labour and socially conservative with it. With no aspirations for their kids but to be the Same As Them. It exists predominantly in the minds of Blue Labour and post-liberals.

And, by the time that were to happen, the majority of people that voted for it will be dead or senile. And still not care about the reality - just what they have read which will still be negative.

Racists don't believe the numbers - whatever they are. They also don't care. It is irrelevant. They say it because they think it makes them sound non-racist because gullible people believe it or nasty people pretend it. But they will also point at me (uk born) as not deported to prove the point.

When on earth are they going to learn that their number of people deported figures are meaningless to absolutely everybody. Liberal people are appalled and racists don't believe it or do not think it is enough. This is a dead end in which Labour with wither and die.

just the perfect story

'Don't you dare try to invest in our area or create jobs'. Just imagine this lot in charge of the country

The Jewish Chronicle is perhaps the only paper in British history where we are not allowed to know who owns it, or why. Its refusal to run an ad critical of Netanyahu makes this untenable, writes @arusbridger.bsky.social. www.prospectmagazine...
