My heart goes out to all researchers impacted by this assault on US science, these impacts will be felt around the world

In our latest Editorial we discuss the continuing damage being done to US science, and its impact on researchers and the environment 👇 Deep cuts: www.nature.com/articles/s41...

The structure of aquatic food webs does not fit standard allometric predictions. Here, García-Oliva & Wirtz explain the co-evolution of specialist and non-specialist predators in aquatic food webs and how this helps reconstruct food webs on the basis of a relatively small number of observations 👇

Exclusive: Over the years, Elon Musk and his businesses have received at least $38 billion in government contracts, loans, subsidies and tax credits, often at critical moments, a Post analysis has found, helping seed the growth that has made him the world’s richest person.

Interested in doing a PhD on #insect #migration or #conservation at @monashuniversity.bsky.social i in #Melbourne, #Australia? If so, please feel free to email me. For international students, the application deadline is late March. shawanchowdhury.com/join-us/

The US just voted alongside Russia, Belarus and North Korea against a UN resolution to support Ukraine. This is a wake-up call for all those cheerleading Trump in our country.

Interesting work by van der Meersch et al. out in Ecology Letters, nicely illustrating that process-based models are more robust than correlative models for predicting species distributions under novel climatic conditions doi.org/10.1111/ele....

Estimating current and future impacts of global mariculture production on marine biodiversity, Ma et al. show that it is possible to increase finfish and bivalve production to meet global demand while also achieving decreases in cumulative impacts to marine #biodiversity by up to 30.5% in 2050.

In its speed, severity, and sheer scope, the first month of the second Trump administration has been a completely unprecedented assault on US science. Story w/ @alexwitze.bsky.social, @maxkozlov.bsky.social, and Jeff Tollefson: www.nature.com/articles/d41...

🔥🌊 The #Mediterranean is undergoing a rapid ecological shift! Our new study in Nature Communications reveals that #MassMortality events have caused a substantial loss of benthic #trait #diversity in just 5 years Read the full study: www.nature.com/articles/s41... #ClimateChange #MarineEcology 🌍🌐🧪

Multispecies migratory connectivity indicates hemispheric-scale risk to bird populations from global change rdcu.be/eakx0 Data from >329,000 migratory birds shows that connections between breeding regions in Canada and non-breeding regions in South America are at greatest risk from global change

Ambitions in national plans do not yet match bold international protection and restoration commitments Bell-James doi.org/10.1038/s415... "no nation has created a plan that meets all the requirements—and overall ambitions" of target 2: 30% restoration target) target 3: 30 × 30 protection target).

First up in our February issue, the Review that inspired our cover art. Bertelsmeier and colleagues discuss the effects of increasing trade and transport on insect invasions worldwide, and strategies for mitigation of future insect invasions. go.nature.com/4hEx8ZY

Very rapid #thermophilization & #xerophilisation of grassland #plant #communities 🌾🌼🍀🌸in the California Floristic Province #CFP attributed to #climate #change ⬇️ An important study relying on both field surveys & long-term experiments ⬇️ Congrats to Kai Zhu & team shorturl.at/3FsVm

Our February issue is now live! www.nature.com/natecolevol/... Featuring: 🌴 the state of living plant collections 🍃 ethical sampling of herbaria, 💀 hominin population structure, 🌻 genomic divergence in sunflowers

Some journal editors keep inviting me as reviewer despite having declined and told them many times I am no longer available due to my role as full-time editor. I know all too well the pain of finding available referees these days, but at some point my professional sympathies will have to fade...

Boreal forests have been experiencing both gains and losses in recent decades. Liu et al show that boreal forest resilience is more sensitive to forest cover losses than to gains, indicating that functional declines due to forest loss outpace improvements following forest recovery. rdcu.be/d6T8l

Not sure how many will read this, but maybe it will save someone minutes of frustration: if you don't want to be stalked by Copilot in Word, go to File > Account > Account Privacy > Manage Settings, untick the boxes. Many complicated solutions online, this one worked for me

Here we go! The first issue of Nature Reviews Biodiversity is now live🥳🎉🥂. Thank you to our authors, reviewers, and community for the support! We hope you enjoy the reading. www.nature.com/nrbd/volumes...

Our January issue is now live! www.nature.com/natecolevol/... Feat. two studies on lemur evolution and diversity, research on prehistoric cattle husbandry, zoonotic disease transmission, plus our annual Year in Review highlights Cover image from van Elst et al. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

To start the new year at @natureecoevo.bsky.social, we highlight some remarkable studies published in other journals the previous year. My picks for 2024 were [drum roll please]:

The cost of recovering Australia’s threatened species rdcu.be/d5rpJ Reside et al estimate that the total cost of implementing all strategies to recover threatened species in their in situ habitat across Australia summed to an estimated AU$583 billion per year

We are recruiting two postdocs to join our Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services Lab at the University of Tokyo. The topics are biodiversity monitoring and carbon dynamics in northern forests.

Saw someone upbraiding someone else for having a hobby while the world is on fire, and, my friends: 1. The world is ever on fire, this is today's conflagration; 2. If you don't find time for rest and joy the fire will consume you; 3. Don't let people shame you for being an entire human.

And another fake account here (blocked and reported)

[new paper] You probably suspected that loss of pollinator diversity consistently reduces reproductive success for wild and cultivated plants, but here we quantify it: www.nature.com/articles/s41...

We are hiring a postdoc in my lab @colorado.edu to work on this NSF CAREER proposal (tinyurl.com/cak8dkza) to quantify how and when global change (drought, warming) alters the role of biodiversity in ecosystem functioning. Job here: colorado.avature.net/searchhub/Jo... 1/2

I have some PhD projects now available for application if you are interested in insect biodiversity change. Please check out the links below and shout if you have questions!

🌳 New findings 🌳 Phylogenetic diversity cannot be used as a proxy for functional diversity in vascular plant communities 🌲🌳🌴🌵🌱🍀🌾🌼 We used the #sPlot database & found a pronounced decoupling between phylogenetic & functional diversity ⬇️ 🧪🌐🌏🍁 @natureecoevo.bsky.social shorturl.at/Bf5IK

I am accepting applications for a PhD student to join my lab at the University of California, Riverside. If you are interested in plant community ecology, ecosystem function/stability, global change, or restoration, please contact me. Fully funded position available. See my website for more details.
