Historian, Archivist, Photographer. Will happily chat about most things but especially about maritime history, swordfighting, folklore, D&D, and dusty boxes full of old stuff. I’m also a tired human who is going to grad school...again. She/Her 🏳️‍🌈

Everything is overwhelming, but the honey bees are happy that the lemon tree is blooming. Little things like this help. #DailyMagic #UrbanDruid #Witchsky

Gorgeous #Roman glass cups decorated with colourful enamel-painted animals from the Roman arena, AD 200s. Found in richly-furnished ‘princely’ graves in Denmark, where they are known as ‘circus beakers’. National Museum of Denmark. 📷 by me #FindsFriday #Archaeology

I just want to share this with every queer person who has a Substack. (There are easy ways to get off that platform.) micahflee.com/2025/02/not-...

Yay it’s the Omohundro Institute!! Happy to see you here!

A fun thread that makes ol’ Spendthrift Garrietty (who I found in a cemetery once) seem almost normal.

Not me trying to figure out if I could recreate the top of this table as a means of avoiding the existential crisis of everything…

🚨Alert!🚨 We just digitized this 1772 handwritten volume of Irish and Scottish folk dance tunes. Do you know any of these songs? Are they still played? Take a look and let us know what you think! findingaids.bc.edu/repositories...

Absolutely no LGB without the T. Fuck right off with that.

I am so, so tired. And I know you are, too. Here's “Death blowing bubbles,” 18th century. The bubbles symbolize life's fragility. This plaster work appears on the ceiling of Holy Grave Chapel in Michaelsberg Abbey, Bamberg, Germany. After the monastery’s dissolution, it became a hospital.

Tesla's stock is ridiculously overvalued, and even a modest consumer boycott could tank the company, which accounts for the majority of Elon Musk's wealth. The divestment movement weakened apartheid South Africa. Let's do that again. slate.com/business/202...

🎨 Beauty for your TL on a busy Monday: Vermeer’s “View of Delft,” aglow since ca. 1660-61 (Mauritshuis, The Hague) Onward!

I have an MA in History & am three classes away from an MLIS and graduate certificate in Archival Science. Given that the humanities are being gutted, historians are being forced to teach inaccurate history, & the national archives are controlled of Rubio, is there any point to finishing my degree?

The best estimates we have for the 1770s and 80s put church membership rates in Revolutionary America at about 17%. In the election of 1800, the main criticism of and most widespread fear about Jefferson was that he didn’t believe in God.

Went to see the David Tennant #Macbeth tonight with @wanderingyeti.bsky.social AND WHEW boy howdy does Macbeth hit different these days 🙃

You do not need to be an academic to visit an archive. You do not need a degree to visit an archive. There is no terrifying Don at the door grilling potential visitors. If it's your first time, a nice archivist will help you. It's our shared history, our preserved records. Go explore it.

So yes I do know there's a lot going on in the world right now but I also want to share that these photos of Nina Simone & James Baldwin in current National Portrait Gallery show on Baldwin and voices of queer resistance are giving me LIFE npg.si.edu/exhibition/j...

Citation is a timeless habit 🗺️. Just look at cartographical sources cited by famed Ottoman mapmaker Piri Reis in his 1513 atlas, which has a map of South America, where he puts in the margins he used around 20 sources, including 8 Ptolemaic maps u.osu.edu/wagner.19/ma... Also it’s on gazelle skin 🦌

Missed this news that David Hogg was elected vice chair of the DNC, this is exciting.

Shoutout to the archivists who saved this important data! Also, a reminder to support librarians and archivists when they come for us. We do important work for all of you!

I can’t do much to resist all the horror, but I can help you if you want to call your reps. Yes, it does make a difference. Yes, even in red states. Yes, you can just leave a message. If you need help figuring out who to call or a script of what to say, send me a DM or respond here. I’ll help.

I didn’t get a goddamn history degree so I could relive it
