Mechanistically, we propose the insular cortex as a key hub mediating the effects of interoceptive signals on time perception, integrating feelings of boredom, effort, and their impact on the experience of time.

The same task can feel like time flies or drags. Why? We propose subjective duration depends on dynamics of two factors: 'loaded time' (effort) heightens internal sensations & 'empty time' (boredom) focuses attention on them. As task-induced processing demands change, so does perception of time.
