All microbiologists have fond memories of spending hours in lab kitchens preparing synthetic media. In this work, authors show that by adding trace elements to the mix greatly reduces technical variability in microbial growth experiments. Cool stuff! 🔗 royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/full/10....

ICYMI @katholt.bsky.social and I wrote a piece on genomic data sharing and the legacy of foundational HGP documents, the Bermuda Principles and the Ft Lauderdale Agreement. We ask: What do we want science to look like? Who should be included or excluded from doing science? bsky.app/profile/natr...

Supported by @camo-net.bsky.social's travel grant, I attended the 20th International Congress on Infectious Diseases (ICID 2024) and CAMO-Net meeting in Cape Town, South Africa in early-December 2024. In this blog, I share my reflections on this productive journey. camonet.org/2025/02/20/d...

"I think, therefore I am", Descartes's philosophy underscores the essence of being a human.

Out now, a comprehensive guide to metagenomics -- from sample collection to data analysis. This primer covers best practices, challenges, and applications in health, agriculture & environment. A roadmap for studying microbial communities 👇 www.nature.com/articles/s43...

In this study, 18 940 clinical isolates from 7 760 patients were WGSed. >27% of the patients are suspected for between-patient transmission of bacterial isolates. Almost 70% had direct or indirect epidemiological links. 1/3

This is another excellent output from our @imperialcollegeldn.bsky.social HPRU - highlighting how blending academic expertise with national public heath responses brings immense benefit. Please see @aliciad3.medsky.social’s past posts to see the wealth of output on the S. capitis response alone.

Excited to share our latest publication on Staphylococcus capitis. Here, we provide complete genome assemblies and accompanied antimicrobial MIC values of 22 genetically diverse isolates, including the type strains DSM 6717 (subsp. urealyticus) and DSM 20326 (subsp. capitis). doi.org/10.1186/s128...

It was a great pleasure to visit UCL's Grant Museum of Zoology near the Euston Railway Station in London. The slide walls were impressive.

Helpful guidance if PubMed ‘goes down’ - use Europe PMC and doi from Crossref 🧪

OK folks, I have now created a google form that allows people to sign to show their support for my open letter to the President of the Royal Society. Please sign and share widely: forms.gle/miDciq35oxyw...

Modern-Day Oracles or Bullshit Machines? Jevin West (@jevinwest.bsky.social) and I have spent the last eight months developing the course on large language models (LLMs) that we think every college freshman needs to take. thebullshitmachines.com

It's so proud to be elected as a member of the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (BSAC). Looking forward to Society's events and making my contributions. @bsacandjac.bsky.social

Dot plots are an effective (if old school!) way to visualise the pairwise comparison of genomes. For our recent pangenomics project (rdcu.be/d8PZ7), I wrote a small Python package to produce publication ready dot plots. Check it out! github.com/drboothtj/do... pypi.org/project/dotp... 🧪🧬🦠

Global health partnerships help combat AMR by strengthening antimicrobial stewardship and education, as seen in a Zambia-UK collaboration training pharmacy champions and improving prescribing practices. pharmaceutical-journal.com/article/opin...

It's even worse. I noted a few of my previously submitted genomes were missing from NCBI's queue of processing, and my published genome assembly had a wrong version, with my recent update to GenBank missing. Hope they can recover my data. Otherwise, it's a terrible incident in managing public data.

Scientific drawing is an important skill that used to be an integral part of a scientist's training 📝 I use vectors for my drawings- here are 5 reasons why they are awesome (1/6 🧵)

Shocking and despicable. Exploiting the arguably most vulnerable people in society. No wonder public trust in scientists is moving towards rock bottom. Thank you @elisabethbik.bsky.social and all the others shining a light into these dark corners of 'research'.

Walked to Liverpool Cathedral this afternoon and found Kitty Wilkinson's (1785-1860) tombstone nearby. Kitty was an Irish migrant and helped her neighbourhood in maintaining hygiene during the 1832 cholera outbreak in #Liverpool. Later, she opened UK's first public washhouse here to combat diseases.
