Ask yourself, "Does this shart joy?"

"Forty-five percent of complainants said officers beat them while they were handcuffed, and 27% alleged the excessive use of chemical spray, two factors cited in the DOJ’s findings."

This is interesting — a recent study of mode share (the % share of transportation trips by car, transit, walking, biking etc) relative to city size and income levels in almost 800 cities in 61 countries. Interesting results. HT @davidzipper.bsky.social www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

"Women are PIs on 58% of the canceled grants, although they are PIs on only 34% of all active NSF grants. Similarly, Blacks are PIs on 17% of the terminated grants, although they make only 4% of the total pool. Hispanic PIs and those with disabilities were twice as likely to lose a grant."

Typically cool and concise newsletter. I didn't know Ben Franklin had connected a volcanic eruption in Iceland with hazy skies and colder weather in North America.

For everyone who was like “Google search is getting worse,” we were absolutely right.

Really cool how TikTok determined that I'm in Norway and immediately began pushing machine-generated right-wing xenophobic memes into my feed [Fisrt image: pensioner vs asylum seeker; second image 'nationalist!!']

I worry that most of the focus on "AI for science" is getting it backwards. Try to do great science and build awesome technology. Build AI tools when it would be useful. Setting out to do "AI for science" will lead to all sorts of lamplight effects and square peg round holes.

I love zany energy transmission/storage ideas (particularly w/ trains). Sadly this probably isn't zany enough. Coal trains are currently 30% of US railroad traffic and they carry 27 GWh per train. Battery train replacing *just* coal generation w/ renewables requires 27x increase in throughput...

I prefer open floor plan bread boxes.
