Hmmm, trying to get a hold of the CIL mag to get my tax info for a payment I got last year and nobody's answering the phone (after multiple unanswered emails). What's scary is that as I tried different departments I got really outdated voice mail messages and no people. Is everything OK in CIL-land?

🚨 Librarians: for a time-sensitive story, I'd love to speak to you about your current work conditions, the Trump admin's impact, and what you're seeing on the ground. Shares appreciated. Email [email protected] or Signal rstauff.20

You cannot make this shit up. Sharing this jaw-dropping story with a gift link -- give it a read.

Trump is attempting to destroy federal funding for libraries. EveryLibrary made it easy to take action today! action.everylibrary.org/saveimls2025 via @everylibrary.bsky.social

So, I'll give you 3 guesses as to what I'm doing now! (see previous post for clue)

I got the TNG software updated on one server so I thought, what the hell - I'm on a roll - and started to work on fixing the virtual site on another server so that it works. I did. The message I got when I went to the page was "you need PHP 8, you have PHP 7.4, you suck". or something like that.

I'm going to the library today to drop off one book and pick up two that I have that are on hold there. This is not a sustainable practice, I do realize that, but that's just how I roll...

This is why I scream in frustration when folks talk DEI lately - DEI is *preventing* middling White men from taking jobs that should be going to more competent women and Black workers, but don't because misogyny and racism are REAL THINGS.

Now I'm off the boat. We got family pics (my 3 person household, my 6 person immediate family, and my 18 person extended family that also went on the boat) on the dress up night. We cleaned up ok!

I'm on a boat!! See you all next week!!

Woot!! The cover is out, the book is already available for order on the ALA store and shit is getting real!

Sitting at home with freshly baked orange sugar scones with my coffee and snow drifts in my side yard that are taller than my legs (my son would say here that my legs are pretty short, but still). It's a good day to do pretty much nothing at all while contemplating insurrection and the rule of law.

Began my Sunday morning with a brisk bit of shoveling a path for the princess (aka my dog) to get out to pee. Now curled up under a blankie with coffee and a book and a heating pad for my toes.

My latest: Donald Trump promised to bring down the price of eggs. He won’t. Laura Kelly made the same promise, and kept it. #ksleg Read more at: www.kansascity.com/opinion/read...

anntelnaes.substack.com/p/why-im-qui... While the whole cartoon is great, what caught my eye first was Mickey, lying prostrate, after Disney (via ABC) caved to him on the defamation suit last month.

Just sitting on the couch, under a blanket, reading with my dog pressed up against me so close that a piece of paper wouldn't fit between us. She has abandonment issues and prefers to sleep Right Up Against someone all the time. She's my own personal warmer!

It's the 3rd of January - exactly one month before my 52nd birthday. I'm not sure what the significance of that is, it just caught my eye this morning.

Happy New Year

Not reflected here, but I worked on a book of my own in 2024 that will be published in 2025 as well. Looking forward to digging in to more great books in the new year!!

eh, maybe not worse, but definitely no better...

I am frequently asked what is the "best" way for people to buy my work so that the most money gets to me, enough so that I've finally written a primer about it to point people toward, and it also covers my opinions re: libraries, used bookstores and pirating: whatever.scalzi.com/2024/12/30/a...

The dog is so focused on getting some of that chip and dip the boy is eating that she's stalled out hallway to her spot on the couch.

I’ll be honest I just don’t think I can commit to 2025 right now. I need a gap year or something. Just some time to find myself and figure out if another calendar year is really what I want to do with my life.

Libraries need allies, and attorneys can make a big difference in defending the freedom to read. If you’re a lawyer (or know one), check out Lawyers for Libraries (L4L) and join the fight against censorship: lawyersforlibraries.org. 📚⚖️ #FreedomToRead #IntellectualFreedom

The library is an awesome resource. Aside from books, you can get free entry to museums, they have conference rooms and study spaces you can book, free subscriptions to ebooks, internet access, writing tools, betterment workshops, etc

Just finished @scalzi.com's new book. IT WAS SO GOOD, y'all!! It had a particular resonance for me, too. My family is likely grateful that I'll no longer break into song - "when the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie..."🎶 randomly as I read.

Opinion | Elon Musk's brilliance starts with letting his lieutenants run the day-to-day of his most valuable properties, whether that's Linda Yaccarino (X), Gwynne Shotwell (SpaceX), or Donald Trump (United States of America).

I'm sure this is the end game, but it's hard to watch so many talented and passionate people get forced out of their libraries for sticking up for what is right.

Today, I got an email from my Alexa telling me that my front door lock, which is connected to Alexa so I can lock the door from upstairs (never needed to do that, but I could, you know) is complaining about being low on batteries and I don't think I want to be that involved in my appliances' drama.

My dog is *very* focused on me tonight. It has nothing to do with the sofrito burrito bowl I was eating at the time, I'm sure. Nothing at all.

Good morning and Happy Tuesday to everyone who is disgusted at ABC's decision to bend the knee to trump because George Stephanopoulos said mean & true things about him. This is STILL the USA, where free speech STILL means something. Even if you're a convicted felon "president."

I don't know, my job is pretty great... I spent my morning providing tech support to 2 different libraries so that they could provide books to their patrons. All Saturday librarians rock!

We’re cancelling the guilty part of guilty pleasures. Wanna read romance books and drink cheap wine? Valid. Watch the trashiest reality show and scroll through Amazon? I support this. Listen to the same early 2000s pop song a thousand times in a row? Why stop there? Find that joy and SQUEEZE.

I'm once again asking for a show where a librarian, a bookseller, and a carpenter travel around helping people manage their out-of-control book collections. Discuss their sentimental value, their rarity, their histories, then build amazing book nooks and shelves and little libraries to organize them

Well, even if it isn't, it's how I'll be answering from here on out.
