Cactus, Texas is a small town an hour north of Amarillo on the plains of the Panhandle. Two weeks before Christmas in 2006, roughly 10% of the residents of Cactus disappeared.

Instead of sending me emails soliciting even more money, why not communicate with Trump voters on social media about how he’s letting them down, something they’ll never learn on Fox Mews. Dems concede Republicans ‘running circles’ around them online as Trump remakes Washington - POLITICO

Arithmetic is elitist; MAGA relies on math.

Happy 175th birthday to Thomas Edison! 🎂 Recently I’ve become more of an Edison person than a Tesla person.

Movie lovers with a political bent should not miss this podcast.

No slight too small for Trump’s pettiness. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/07/u...

Now the whole country gets the experience of what it's like when private equity buys the place you work

X sued more advertisers for “conspiring” not to advertise on X. Musk seems to think he’s entitled to their advertising dollars no matter what X does. I declare a Reverse Boycott: Use the list of defendants as a shopping list of what products to buy.

Black History Month: Henry Tanner, the only African American impressionist. This painting in the National Gallery in DC, if it hasn’t been looted.

I honestly believe our most powerful position in a toxic time that feeds on cynicism, apathy,& despair is to genuinely care and act for a better world. Cynicism is our enemy. We should check it, incl. on the left. It’s not intellectually superior. It’s the virus they’re trying to infect us with. NO

Anyone surprised that the focus isn’t really hardened criminals? www.texastribune.org/2025/01/29/t...

Constitution: President “shall take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed.” Trump: last time, I focused on executing people, but this time I’m going to execute a lot of laws, beautiful executions.

Shot of a lifetime. 📸: Ian Turner

It was a body-snatcher moment, watching Austin-area U.S. Rep. Chip Roy, a law-and-order type, standing outside the D.C. jail, demanding the release of Jan. 6 defendants who'd been accused of beating cops. The pardons don't change the truth. My latest for @austin-statesman.com: tinyurl.com/34j3s6fa

Chisos Canyon at Big Bend closing in May for at least two years. Better get a few last hikes done before you can’t.

How do you humblebrag? Do I say, “Borobudur is a magical, spiritual place” (which it is), or do I just come out and say, “Been there, done that” (40 years ago)? www.nytimes.com/2025/01/20/t...

Big fan of Locke’s Highway 59 mystery series. More books need to be set on Caddo Lake.

Only a Buckeye by marriage, but man I’ve enjoyed these last four games. Ohio State—National Champions!!

You can either go on a hike to ignore what’s going on, like I’ve been doing, or you can listen to a hike with Nate and Grandma Gatewood. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/t...

Eloquent in thought and speech, MLK, Jr. reminded us that what is exceptional about the promise of the US Constitution is not how much money one person can make, but how every citizen can thrive and be fulfilled. Now is the time to contemplate his dream and each of our own dreams.

From some points of view, Texas is just a lot of nuthin’

Ransom Center is a remarkable place. Open to the public for research, not just university academics, it has surprises such as Harry Houdini’s collection of magician posters, the blue dress from Gone With the Wind, Graham Green’s writing desk, and Kazuo Ishiguro’s typewriter.

Red-Tailed Hawk accompanied us on our hike today.

This really pisses me off… Republicans are trying to repeal the $35 cap on insulin. Please spread the word.

Hiking Big Bend South Rim to celebrate 75th birthday.

NEW: Israel has repeatedly crossed the Biden administration’s human rights red lines. But the U.S. continued to send weapons. Exclusive records and interviews reveal what happened inside the State Department.

As predictable news breaks timely infuriating poll via @ryangrim.bsky.social "Twenty-nine percent of non-voters who supported Biden in 2020 said U.S. support for the genocide was the top reason they sat the 2024 election, according to a survey by YouGov." A colossal F'up by Biden/Harris admin.

Guess I’m a moon lover, too. Just another Texas morning.

According to the conversations in Israeli media, one thing holding Israel back from a ceasefire was/is the concern that when western reporters and human rights groups are allowed in, the true scale of the crime will shock the global conscience in a way it hasn’t yet

www.nytimes.com/2025/01/11/o... Note Trump’s hand; where exactly is his heart, anyway?

What Bluesky needs is more sports talk. I know you are all excited about the college football national championship game. Quit holding back. This is a safe place. Everyone will support your team.

To all my Longhorn friends, hope you wore your UT t-shirt to work today, because you won’t want to wear it tomorrow.

"The job of the Democratic party comes in two parts. First: Do not help Republicans. Not in any way. Second: Make Donald Trump own every bad outcome that happens, anywhere in the world..." www.thebulwark.com/p/democrats-...

J. Frank was mentor to my good friend John Henry Faulk. Might help in these times to channel a little John Henry.
