1/ Meet the five new members of the eLife Board of Directors 👇 Today, we welcome Dinesh Natesan, Kamran Naim, Fiona Watt, Huda Zoghbi and Krishnaswamy VijayRaghavan 🎉 https://buff.ly/4hIvlD7

NIH is cancelling its climate and health initiatives. We haven't received word yet of whether they'll rescind our grants, but . . . BTW these are programs to build climate resilience so people die less. That's it. That's the whole goal. We just want people to die less.

I had been away from X and after I deleted all my accounts, I didn't feel the need to try another social media, but there is too much chaos right now to remain cut off from what is happening. I never thought my first post on this platform would be about this...this is how a lab dies...1/n 👇

Deconstructing the neural circuit underlying social hierarchy in mice www.cell.com/neuron/fullt... - lovely work from Hailan Hu and colleagues

Trump and Musk aim to push out 75% of federal employees. NIH has a highly trained workforce to perform, review, and support science in all 50 states. This cut will decimate America’s science. Cancer research will drop to a trickle. Talented workers will leave to go abroad. 🧪 #medsky 1/

Come be my colleague! We are hiring very broadly in cancer biology. Great colleagues and department, lots of support, sure the winter is cold but our hearts are warm!

BREAKING The Trump administration is maintaining a funding freeze at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in defiance of two federal court orders. The ongoing freeze was confirmed by an NIH official and internal correspondence reviewed by Popular Information.

The new NIH policy for indirect costs going forward is capped at 15%. This is forever going to alter the science ecosystem, upending and destroying a number of programs at universities across the country. grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

Re-upping this: Deadline is Feb 15th. PI position at our Research Institute at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. Successful candidate will be cross-appointed at U of T. Great research community, great city! Early- and mid-career applications welcome. can-acn.org/scientist-se...

Ticket sales for the CAN 2025 "Neural Circuits and Behaviour" satellite event have opened! Lots of exciting talks, including the keynote address from @sjo09.bsky.social. Trainees, we'll select 4 trainee attendees for talks, along with a "Best Talk" award. Details: www.eventbrite.ca/e/neural-cir...

Just giving this a boost for those who may not have seen it yet... we have a PI position (molecular and cellular basis of cognition) at The Hospital for Sick Children (Toronto). The position comes with an appointment at Assist/Assoc Prof level at U of T. Share widely! can-acn.org/scientist-se...

Circuit Neuroscientist on the academic job market? Come work with us at the Hospital for SickKids/Univ of Toronto! ‘Scientist’ = PI position with cross appointment at U.Toronto. This a very supportive, multi-disciplinary scientific env’t in a diverse and progressive city! 👇 apply by Feb 15th.

Beautiful example of synthetic biology with clinical implications

I participated in a faculty panel a few weeks ago in which senior (ahem) faculty gave advice on careers in academia by pretending luck had very little to do with our success. One piece of advice riled me up, in which it was argued that a reason for their success was their ability to say no. 1/

This piece resonates with me a lot, worth a read!

#FluorescenceFriday adult born neurons in the mouse hippocampus TGIF!

A thread on NIH Reorganization and the Scientific Management Review Board (SMRB) Disclosure: I was involved with the SMRB since its inception and have very strong feelings about how it was used, misused, and abandoned. My passion on these issues will undoubtably show through. 1/n

Not yet #FluorescenceFriday but look at these hippocampal neurons 😍

Just watched the full House hearing & testimony of NIH Director Dr. Monica Bertignolli. A few takeaways: • the proposed budget, in addition to not increasing for inflation, wants to condense NIH from 27 to 15 institutes. The NIH does not think this is a good idea. 🧵1/?

Our latest issue dropped. On the cover, the developmental biology of #dogs (and other mammal) noses! 🐶🧪 👉https://www.cell.com/current-biology/issue?pii=S0960-9822(23)X0023-2

A pretty cool tool! Now I have no excuse to not read new papers...

The Kebschull and @rezakalhor.bsky.social labs are recruiting a joint postdoc for an exciting project at the interface of phylodynamics and neuroscience. Come join us at JHU BME. Spread the word, and contact us if you are interested. #hiring 🧪🧠. More on www.kebschull-lab.org and below.

As our community grows here, reminder that our free hands on course on all aspects of modeling neural development and disease with #assembloids and #organoids will be taking place next year 👇

Now that half of SciTwitter is here… Come be my colleague! The Dept of Cell Biology @EmoryUniversity is recruiting a developmental cell biologist. 🔬Do you study mechanisms of development using cell biological (and other) approaches? Join us!🔬 TY for RT! jobs.sciencecareers.org/job/664684/t...

My starter pack is growing! Please reach out if you use animal models (flies, worms, mice, fish, etc) to study disease mechanisms and want to be added. go.bsky.app/MhUwjSx

Now we are all on BlueSky, it's a good time to remind everyone thinking about coming to Canadian Neuroscience this year that there will be a second edition of our circuits and Behaviour (with a U) satellite. May 21, all day event. Plan accordingly!

Neurophotonics is now on Bluesky! For our first post here, we'd like to announce the opening of the call for participation to the Summer School Frontiers in Neurophotonics! Visit neurophotonics.ca/school for more info about this school that combines lectures and hands-on experiments

Putting together a Canadian Neuroscientist starter pack. If you're not on the list let me know! Started really small and certainly missed many go.bsky.app/L6WSrTD

Now that science bsky is a thing, I would like to remind you that my Department has two faculty openings in cancer biology/-omics/immunology. Come work with me - We have a very supportive environment, big dreams, and life in Sherbrooke is so good! shorturl.at/EcnMZ @futurepislack.bsky.social

Incredible resource for DNA binding protein specificity from the Codebook consortium. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... Am reading these in detail & will have a lot to say. Stay tuned for thoughts.

I created a starter pack trying to regroup Canadian health research scientist. Let me know if I missed any. I'll try to update the pack regularly. go.bsky.app/DyiHkEF
