Late medieval urine wheel, c.1500. Before stethoscopes and x-rays, a pot of piss was an important diagnostic tool. The wheel usually consisted of 20 different colours ranging from "white as well-water" to "black as very dark horn." The colour was associated with various ailments.

“Wound Man” is an illustration which first appeared in European surgical texts during the Middle Ages. It laid out schematically the various wounds a person might suffer in battle or in accidents, with accompanying text stating treatments. Tag yourself as a wound ahead of the holidays!

Just finished the brilliant guided tour of Wilton's Music Hall in Grace Street London. Fascinating place and amazing history.

Trepanation involved drilling holes into the skull to alleviate various conditions in the past. Here, the holes in the skull [2200 B.C.E.] have begun to heal which suggests that although dangerous, this ancient procedure was not necessarily fatal. #histmed Photo: @wellcomecollection.bsky.social
