News that Wisdom, the 74-yr-old (at least) albatross, has hatched a new chick is cheering me immensely. (The fact that she's a Laysan albatross is equally pleasing. Nominative determination at its finest #laysanotheregg)

This morning's run took me to Nan Tucks Lane, Buxted, Sussex. Didn't find any ghosts though!

Mapping The London Of Sherlock Holmes

This morning's pre dawn sky was lovely. Pity it's so grey now.

A special #Caturday this week: today is the 14th anniversary of my arrival on Downing Street.

Lovely to see the primroses out again.

My #sciart #illustration of the #Orange-tip #Anthocharis cardamines #butterfly with the #Cuckoo-flower #Cardamine pratensis. Cuckoo flower is also called lady's smock and flowers in late spring. It's the host plant for the Orange tip's caterpillars. We can eat it too, rather delicious and mustardy.

I spent yesterday's sunrise in the company of the old yew by Margaret the Queen in Buxted, Sussex and found myself wondering how many sunrises it had seen.

Happy Chinese New Year - Wood Snake, inspired by lichen-covered twigs found in our local woodland.

Wonderful sunrise this morning - and plenty of us scurrying around getting our runs, dog walks and chores in before the rain set in.

Today is St Paul's Day. In The Shepherd's Almanack (1676) it says of this day, 'If the sun shines it betokens a good year; if it rain or snow, indifferent; if misty, it predicts a great dearth; if it thunder, great wind, and death of people that year.' Here in Wiltshire today - sunshine! 🌞

I've just done my #biggardenbirdwatch2025 - not a great count but the visiting Bullfinch did the decent thing and turned up :-)

Nice to see Michaela is wearing a Puffin hat like mine on #winterwatch

Minutes after reading the notice on the Riddlesdown Countryside Office noticeboard, I found this patch of Stinking Hellebore, Helleborus foetidus. Due to the light green colour of the flowers it was visible at quite a distance! (See next post.) #WildflowerHour

This Roman pot handle is both elegant and practical. Excavated at Arne near Poole by Wessex Archaeology is part of an exciting pottery production site seen on #diggingforbritain #drawingdiggingforbritain #archaeology

Last #DrawingForBritain For me, it was pottery that told the story: Roman grave goods from Holburn, Black Burnishware from Poole Harbour and Omani pattern China used by Romany people in the New Forest.

A chevron or star glass trading bead used in the slave trade, found in Devon. #drawingdiggingforbritain #diggingforbritain @richardosgood.bsky.social

Wessex Archaeology looking for a mill near Bedminster in Bristol features on #diggingforbritain - with querns used for flooring. I loved the glassware they found - not ‘Bristol blue’ but gorgeous. #drawingdiggingforbritain #archaeology

Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui), observed near Start Point, South Devon on 14/1.

Just love that one of the sites was found by a badger! The horse's bit with the rings is so like one we used to use at riding school. #DrawingDiggingForBritain

I’ve been struggling with poor lighting this evening but here is today’s #DrawingDiggingforBritain: the exquisite knife from Bishop Auckland with a decorated elephant ivory handle.

I really loved this morning's sunrise - Buxted Park, Sussex.

Minus 5 overnight in Uckfield, Sussex. Nice to see the sunrise though.

Here's the reality about the #LAFires this week: this isn't the first time ANY of these places have burned. Not even close. In 2018, we mapped CA fire history to look at fire frequency across SoCal. Santa Monica Mtns area burns more than anywhere else -- up to once per decade in a given spot. 🧵

I was fascinated by the #DiggingForBritain USS Jacob Jones story and charmed that the bell rang when being recovered www.royalnavy.mod.uk/news/2024/fe...

Incredible story about the WW1 ship, The Jacob Jones. The bell is just stunning. #DrawingDiggingForBritain

6 Jan: This 16th-century Adoration of the Magi is a rare fragment of a decorated fireplace, formerly in Uckfield, Sussex, where it was in situ till 1860. (V&A London)
