One danger of embracing generative AI as a learning device and in language assistance is that you're letting the keepers of that AI have power over what you learn and how you write. It will be programmed with biases, unintentional but often *quite* intentional, that you will unknowingly adopt.

Very interesting thread on what makes some fonts more readable than others.

forgo = to go without forego = to go before That you'll choose the wrong one doesn't have to be a foregone conclusion — a conclusion that is reached before examination or argument even takes place. #amediting

Last week, the U.S. Copyright office released the second part of its report on how generative AI and copyright law intersect. In short, nothing has really changed in their view: Work must be produced by humans to qualify for copyright. #LLMs #GenAI #Copyright www.wordsbywes.ink/a... 1/6

I was just reminded that Microsoft Word's change tracking can create gaps in footnote numbers. I knew that happens when footnotes are moved. I didn't know it also happens when punctuation before a note marker changes. Here's how to avoid that. #AmEditing #MicrosoftWord www.wordsbywes.ink/a...

Editing a health humanities essay this week I was reflecting on how my *confusion* has matured. It used to feel like a failure of comprehension; I've reframed it as a 🎁 to my writer by asking *why* I'm confused and what would change that. Be curious even about yourself! #amediting #academicediting

Has anyone figured out how to turn off this stupid AI error assist that Overleaf added? On top of it breaking my client agreements if I accidently click it, it's a horrible waste of screen real estate. Half of the error log is now taken up by this. #TexLaTeX #Overleaf

Did you know you can limit search and replace in a Word document to specific parts of the document, like the footnotes or comments? I just found this out, and it was a huge timesaver for cleaning up a bunch of footnotes. www.wordsbywes.ink/a... #AmEditing

Bucking the trend of companies breaking our editing tools, the OED has (finally) increased their session timeout. I stayed logged in all day yesterday, but it didn't last overnight. Oddly, they made the longer sessions opt-in. #AmEditing

OKAY. Here is how to actually turn off Gemini AI for your google workspace! 1) contact google support from admin panel and keep asking for a supervisor/to speak to a person. 2) ask them to enable settings in "Gemini for google workspace" 3) turn it off. I just did this and it worked.

I just realized that, in an amazing feat of foresight, I never turned updates back on for Microsoft Office after their last fiasco.

We can argue about “data”, but “criteria” is fucking PLURAL and I will die on this hill. One criterion, two criteria, red criterion, blue criterion.

Really good thread from Dr Birhane. I also struggle to find actual, beneficial use cases for LLMs. There's always a "would be great for X except Y" and the Y is always someone being harmed.
