That Iran may be a paper tiger and not really have the military capabilities to respond hard doesn’t make this less of crime in international law or in US law. It actually makes it worse. But it will be a relief from worrying about US casualties and will make internal (US) repression less likely.

The Iranian government cannot maintain legitimacy if they don’t retaliate. Of course that’s going to provoke more strikes. With the first American casualties, we will have to rally around the troops. And that’s how the cycle of violence and power maintain itself and amplifies our loss of freedom.

I’m afraid the left idea that a war with Iran will fracture MAGA is wishful thinking. Any conflict with an external enemy will draw them closer to their leader, even if they have misgivings about other aspects. If anything it will fracture the left.

There’s a chance that given Schumer bellicose rhetoric about Iran, a deal has been struck between him and Trump. Like “I’m not going to obstruct anything if you bomb them.” I admit that this is speculative. Still Schumer cooperation with the administration makes no sense politically otherwise.
