Not only did she block me, she deleted her incredibly muddled answers to my super basic methodological questions

The amazing thing about white papers is that you get to have peer review from an unlimited number of sources before committing to a project. Itā€™s far more rigorous than regular peer review, in a way, since you invite one and all to scrutinize your method. Will look out for it!

Otherwise itā€™s not really a dataset per se, itā€™s just a spreadsheet, ykwim?

Or if itā€™s a binary variable, then it might look like a list of criteria used for classificatory purposes, with some examples of what was and was not included and why/ why not šŸ‘šŸ»

Assuming what youā€™re saying here is a reflection of the analysis, it sounds like the dependent variable might be ā€œproblematic action?ā€ So then the Q is, how is ā€œproblematic actionā€ operationalized? Whatā€™s the metric? How is it calculated? Thatā€™s the methodological write-up Iā€™d want to see.

Or are you simply building a dataset of descriptive stats here? Maybe Iā€™m reading too much into ā€œanalysis?ā€ I am also unclear about criteria for case selection, but thatā€™s a separate question I think I have to log off, maybe youā€™ll reply later. And if not, Iā€™ll look for that white paper!

Yes but Iā€™m still struggling with the more fundamental basicsā€¦ with what the dependent variable of this analysis isā€¦ Another word for dependent variable can be ā€œoutcome variable,ā€ maybe itā€™s the terminology Iā€™m using
comment in response to post
I totally get that this is network analysis (Iā€™ve done some myself). I guess Iā€™m confused about where the analysis is very generally headed? I think the simplest way I can put it is to ask what the dependent variable is

To clarifyā€¦ I thought this was an analysis that maps abusive patterns? I guess Iā€™m interesting in learning more on how youā€™re operationalizing that specifically.

Your only variable is also your case ID variable? I guess I donā€™t understand what you mean when you say youā€™re going to run an analysis then? Whatā€™s the ultimate dependent variable here?

And to be clear: I reject the academic monopoly on ā€œpeer review.ā€ What I am saying here is that I of course embrace peer review as a ***general concept***, as a basic good-practice principle for data Not suggesting this had to go thru academic channels. Community review is all good ofc!!!
comment in response to post
If we access the data, there will be a methods section or write up attached, yes? As a researcher myself, i ofc always get more from the nitty gritty on operationalization etc . Network analysis is super tricky and understanding the operationalization is key to interpretation

Looks like reviews are the main way to share thoughts with others?

Is there a way to add actual notes to the reading journal; or it is just a log of what youve read? No need to share instructions if there is a way, just would like to know so I can motivate myself to keep trying (so far the app doesnā€™t seem to allow this, but I tend to give up easily)
comment in response to post
I read a lot and have so many notes, would be fun to connect more with folks also doing the reading (Iā€™m currently reading Care Work too, among other things)
comment in response to post
I use zotero to organize my reading notes because it has a handy way to semi-automatically add pdf links (super relevant for journal articles), and because it folds into word processing applications so citations are easier Wish there were more functions for sharing tho. Will check out storygraph

PS this is feeling like a classic philosopher/sociologist conversation, I love it
comment in response to post
In other words, clean idealistic models for single-purpose platforms donā€™t feel like the best thinking tool here. Iā€™m open to it tho! Just not seeing it right now
comment in response to post
Iā€™m not sure itā€™s fair to assume little overlap between community functions vs activism functions. As a sociologist, I think of many examples of how these functions are inextricably intertwined, often in thick ways. I suspect assuming itā€™s one or the other might be a problematic premise

Sometimes we get trapped by our own metaphors / models

Hmm Iā€™m still thinking this feels very zero-sum to me, and Iā€™m not at all convinced it has to be

That doesnā€™t sound like a good path. What do you think about this one tweak: official accounts (corporate accounts, public office) can still block, but everyone still gets to see the blocked posts? And the current Bluesky rules can continue to apply to everyone else?

What do you think about this one tweak: official accounts (corporate accounts, public office) can still block, but everyone still gets to see the blocked posts? And the current Bluesky rules can continue to apply to everyone else? I refuse to accept we canā€™t consider both things at once

Thoughts on the trade off here, besides the fact that yes thereā€™s obviously a trade off? And do say more about this radically different platform you have in mind!
comment in response to post
Bluesky blocking feature is great from the POV of neutralizing trolls, but itā€™s bad news for activism. Itā€™s so easy for corporations etc to just block and invisibilize any criticism Thoughts from fellow activists?

Just here to offer my personal thanks for all your labor. Iā€™m here, thanks to you and other generous organizers! Thank you thank you thank you I posted the same # disability post here and also on X, and only got engagement here. Looks like the migration is really happening!!!
