Spring is in the air! It's been the warmest day of the year so far here at Wild Lakeland HQ, reaching 15.3c! We have had our first sighting of a Buff-tailed Bumblebee, and plenty of Lesser Celandines bursting into flower!

Now is a good time to look out closely for the freshly emerging shoots of Pignut (Conopodium majus) in meadows and other species-rich grasslands. #Wildflowerhour @bsbibotany.bsky.social @wildflowerhour.bsky.social

The first Lesser Celandine is out in our meadow, and look just how important these early wildflowers are for insects such as this Hoverfly! #SpringIsComing #Wildflowers

One of my favourite wildflowers is emerging from its winter slumber in the hedgerows. It's scientific name is Adoxa moschatellina, but does anyone know what it's common name is?

Sedum anglicum (English Stonecrop) with some Rumex acetosella (Sheep's Sorrel) thrown in, growing on rocks in the NW Lake District this weekend. @bsbibotany.bsky.social @wildflowerhour.bsky.social #Wildflowerhour #LakeDistrict

Must admit I'm a bit mad on Daffodils so I am going to start a thread with all the varieties I have planted at @wildlakeland.bsky.social HQ . In order as they come into flower... Starting with Narcissus 'tete-a-tete'. Small, early and delightful!

Song Thrush in full song for the first time this year! 😍

In 2019 and 2020 we carried out bracken to grassland restoration on an area of very dense, deep litter bracken... Here is a quick revisit 5 years on... The area is now fairly species-rich with tonnes of Hypericum, Tormentil, Bugle, Dog-violet, Pignut and even Wood Anemone.

Fell Ponies had lots of energy today! One of them seemed to have a particular bout of the zoomies! #LakeDistrict #FellPonies #ConservationGrazing

Snowdrops now looking superb and Spring now feeling like it might be on the horizon! #LakeDistrict #Wildflowerhour

More #SignsOfSpring - not quite there yet but getting closer. Green Hellebore, Helleborus viridis & Wild Daffodils, Narcissus pseudonarcissus. #wildflowerhour at Witherslack Woods, Cumbria

The Buttermere valley.

Look who are back at Loweswater! The Fell Ponies! If you followed us on twitter you may remember we have Fell Pony grazing every winter as a critical part of maintaining plant diversity across the species-rich grasslands. #LakeDistrict #FellPonies #Conservation

Borrowdale

Had to stop and admire this Lancashire style of hedge-laying today, on land which was historically in Lancashire! #Hedgelaying #Hedgerows

Exactly 4 years between photos. Hedge-laying in 2021 (left), with 4 years of growth and a couple of trims to create a nice dense, impenetrable hedge (right). Should remain manageable for another 20 years before it can once again be laid, and the hedge cycle starts again! #Hedgelaying #Hedgerow

The road to spring is here! We have our first Snowdrop in flower at Wild Lakeland HQ! The days are getting longer, and the sun is shining! 🌞 #LakeDistrict #Spring #Snowdrops

Back from a rather prolonged break! Been to Tenerife and La Gomera, with some time looking at endemic plants, and other wildlife! 😍 #CanaryIslands #Tenerife #LaGomera #Botany #Wildlife

Some unusual layered cloudscapes across Skiddaw today. These two photos are several hours apart to show how it has been gradually changing. #LakeDistrict #Clouds #Skiddaw #NorthLakes

Merry Christmas everyone, from a gloomy north Lakes this morning! #LakeDistrict #Christmas

A few from Northumberland.

Some vibrant Gorse (Ulex europaeus) on the Northumberland coast, flowering in quite an abundance, for this week's #wildflowerhour

A day late for #wildflowerhour, but I do have another species now in flower! A defiant Primrose (Primula vulgaris) wanting to get underway with Spring! Maybe a little too early! @bsbibotany.bsky.social @wildflowerhour.bsky.social
