Magnolia macrophylla (Bigleaf Magnolia) bud just before the ‘fuzz’ becomes prevalent.

The native tiny bluets (Houstonia pusilla) are starting to bloom. These cute wildflowers have purple-blue flowers only 1/4”. Common & native plant of southeastern US. Small bees & flies visit the flowers & the Spotted Thyris moth larvae feed on the leaves. Growing natively on our sunny slope.

Signs of spring: American Beech (Fagus grandifolia) dropping its leaves. This native tree retains leaves through winter (marcescence). Come spring, they drop. Info in alt-text

Asarum arifolium have several common names out there, and the one I adore the most is Little Brown Jugs, named after its flowers hidden under the plant’s foliage. This is an native plant of Southeastern US that grows in shade. Flowers pollinated be beetles, ants, flies, and insects.

Tonight’s side dish: Kale Caesar Salad. Our winters are mild and most greens such as kale and collards grow for 3 seasons: autumn, winter, and spring. These vegetables were planted in the garden last October and are still producing today.

Signs of spring: Viburnum prunifolium (Blackhaw) bud that will turn into a cluster of small, white flowers in a few weeks. Blackhaw is a small native tree that grows approximately 20’ high.

Signs of spring are showing in our blueberry buds. Here’s a blueberry fruit bud versus leaf bud comparison … backdropped with a hand trowel to assist the focus. We yanked out the former owner’s boxwood shrubs and replaced them with blueberries.

Dictyoptera aurora (known as red or golden net-winged beetle) basking in the winter’s sun on a log. They are related to fireflies but don't glow. Wings have net-like / reticulate texture. 🪲 🪳

Hellebore season is here! I maintain a small patch, and each variety is sentimental for me. These pass-along plants have backstories connecting past family generations with today.
