I think I've finished Beast. I think I am very happy with it. Published by @ofmooseandmen.bsky.social in July

“Mr Pharmacist” Pen, ink and crayon over monotype 2025 (37cm x 27cm) Liverpool Homœopathic Dispensary was built in 1860. It became a bakery in 1888 when the ornate shop front was added. It’s now a bar. Its architect, Peter Ellis, is one of the fathers of modern architecture. It’s not listed😳

20 years of blogging. There are a number of posts about The Lowry Lounge, held annually in Liverpool for Malcolm. Here's a sample post, prob. the most detailed, when Iain Sinclair joined us! 2014: robertsheppard.blogspot.com/2014/10/malc...

Through a new exhibition at Tate St Ives, Lally MacBeth enters the magic-infused world of the artist, writer and occultist Ithell Colquhoun — where plant, human, mineral and animal coalesce. www.caughtbytheriver.net/2025/02/betw...

Sharing this wonderful portrait of Edwin Morgan by Alasdair Gray for #GrayDay! Hope our friends at @agrayarchive.bsky.social have a great evening celebrating 90 years of the inimitable Alasdair Gray 🎉 Image credit: Glasgow Life Museums 🎨

Great to see a good helping of ‘Zerox Machine: Punk, Post Punk and Fanzines 1978-1981’ by Matt Worley at The Holloway in Norwich. A book I edited for @reaktionbooks.bsky.social and which is also a superb alternative history of Britain in the 70s and 80s.

I really enjoyed my Wild Twin conversation with Sophy Roberts for her podcast Gone to Timbuktu. Sophy's book, 'The Lost Pianos of Siberia' is a brilliant read and her new one, 'A Training School for Elephants' hits the shops today. Hear our conversation here: www.gonetotimbuktu.com/jeff-young

This is my monthly link dump containing a mix of links to interesting blog posts I’ve read from the past month covering arts & culture, myth, folklore, landscape punk, hauntology, anarchism, utopianism, the gothic, neo-fabulism, and the Weird: www.lazaruscorporation.co.uk/blogs/artist...

Ghost Town moodiness, Monday night in Soho, Darren Coffield and me talking Liverpool, Kes, Liverpool School of Language, Music, Dream & Pun and truancy. Thanks to lovely crowd for a great night x

In which we welcome one of @backlisted.bsky.social's heroes, the writer and critic, John Lahr. Join me, @iammilliam.bsky.social, and Nicky Birch as we explore the huge (in every sense) A Life by Elia Kazan, a book as gutsy, bruising & brilliant as the man himself. www.backlisted.fm/episodes/234...

“No good deed goes unpunished but no bad one is entirely without merit.” New @backlisted.bsky.social episode on Elia Kazan’s memoirs, with guest John Lahr joining me, @johnmitchinson.bsky.social and @birchos.bsky.social. www.backlisted.fm/episodes/234...

Line up our new episode with biographer and critic John Lahr, discussing not only Elia Kazan but also Joe Orton, Barry Humphries, Tennessee Williams, and his father Bert Lahr AKA The Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz. www.backlisted.fm/episodes/234...

Goodnight Stan, mind how you go, Going home tonight. Bill Fay RIP youtu.be/av-NkRtuaWo?...

Bill Fay RIP. Absolutely crushing news. The loveliest person I ever interviewed. Gracious, wise and humble. I wanted to write a book about him. He declined, believing the commitment involved would take him away from his great joy in life, composing songs. Fly on Bill. Those songs will last forever.

Jeff is a maestro of time, memory and loss, and it’s always a treat to hear him talk about his work

If you’re not at Richard James Foster’s book event this evening - which is where I’d be if I wasn’t doing this - maybe come along to this Ghost Town evening with Darren Coffield. Have a great night @richardjamesfoster.bsky.social !

Happy Birthday to Ghost Town, 5 years old today - a bumpy start just as the pandemic kicked in but it did ok! Thank you to everyone who read it, reviewed it, got in touch to talk about it. Above all, thanks to the mighty @littletollerbooks.bsky.social who made it happen. X

Photo of the demolition of the overhead walkways (from the Echo). Brutalism, modernism, and (*shudders*) post-modernism, all in one handy pic.

You don't need to be familiar with Liverpool to fall in love with this book!
