I had an amazing interview with seven students and a head of school in Bangalore where kids are actually being told the truth about what's happening in the world and give the space and support to attack those challenges in meaninful and engaging ways. What a concept.

I thought someone was taking care of this...

Here's what's lighting me up the last couple of days: I've found a couple schools, one in Bangalore and one in Compton, where students are being told the harsh truths about the world and are encouraged to work on meaningful projects to address those challenges. What a concept. Film at 11.

My latest on Substack: "Here's the point: it’s ok to feel 'woo-wee.' In fact, it may be required. Feeling yourself as land, or sensing all other life as kin, or allowing it all to “dream through us” is language that’s asking us to go into spaces we aren’t used to going...that's a good thing."

Dear Whoever Will Listen, Eliminating the US Department of Ed and opening up school choice and giving public funds to private schools and enacting whatever the next move is to kill public education is will not improve the outcomes you are in a panic about and will likely lead to worse results. 1/

#collapse We teaching this?

"More wealth = more ecosystem destruction." We get this, right?

"Rather then expect tech, the market and the state to "fix" healthcare, we're better off accepting the system has no solutions because the profit streams and power structure are sacrosanct and cannot be touched, even though they're the source of the problem." Amen. We teaching this?

If you're in #education and you haven't started thinking about how to best serve the climate migrant children that are almost certainly in your future, now might be a good time...

For all of you going gaga over J. Haidt's #1 bestseller "The Anxious Generation," take deep breath. He's wrong. #thatisall

Not sure when I’ve been so profoundly impacted by works of art as these: “Parallel Universes of War and Peace” Just a warning…some of these are pretty disturbing. But we can’t turn away. instagram.com/ugurgallen

"The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results” – Albert Einstein I mean, just look at the picture associated with this story. Attention #education: This is not how young humans #learn best. But, yeah, let's just keep tweaking...

I actually talked to a #school founder from Bangalore and one of her Year 10 students this morning, and it's made me more hopeful that we can face the realities of the world with kids, and imagine harder how to prepare them to navigate the shit that's coming their way. #future #education 1/4

Amen. Stay focused.

In case anyone is looking to fill up an hour, I had a great podcast conversation with Steve Walker recently. Have a listen.

Iowa wants to eliminate any reference to climate change from its state science standards. I have thoughts.

Thank god we have a new president in office who has promised to take care of this... Whew!

"Schools were built for a time that no longer exists, and school leaders must widen their perspectives from the constant and specific demands they’re facing to consider bigger questions—much bigger questions..." My new piece with Homa Tavangar in NAIS Magazine. #education

“We’ll go down in history as the first society that wouldn’t save itself because it wasn’t cost effective.” ~Kurt Vonnegut

Oh good...now guys with guns are going to be ALLOWED to enter schools to round up immigrant children because, you know, they're a huge threat... Move along. Nothing to see here. It'll all work out.

I just knew I shoulda kept the laptop shut today...

It's not just California... There's going to be a "Great Insurance Migration" as well...

This week's provocation: Mission Critical #education #schooling #learning

The evolution of the planetary boundaries framework: the last 15 years. Hmmm...

Hello new followers! If you want my latest thoughts on chaos, complexity, and collapse as it relates to education, head over to my Substack: futureserious.substack.com LinkedIn is the other space I write longer form on a fairly regular basis: www.linkedin.com/in/willricha...

A bit of shift toward nature schools is making me happier this morning. Now, how do we take traditional schools and move them in this direction?

My weekly provocation is up: "It’s arguable that we are watching #collapse in real time, collapse that has been happening to people and societies around the world for decades but that is now coming to the WEIRD (western, educated, industrial, rich, democratic) parts of the world."

"If your child is born this year, they are likely going to live through +1.5°C of warming by the time they are 25. A fact that is likely going to cause a 40% to 50% drop in the global food supply and a reduction of 2.5 to 4 billion in the global population by 2050, at a minimum." #wow

Took 'em long enough...

"One of my personal goals this year is to set more time aside for imagining." Some thoughts on building a muscle for the future:

"It appears to many that the changes that are conspiring to push us toward the brink are speeding up." #education #collapse #climate #metacrisis

I'm gonna use this quote to animate my work in 2025. Maybe get it tattooed to my forearm: "Our task is to make trouble, to stir up potent responses to devastating events, as well as to settle troubled waters and rebuild quiet places.” ~Donna Haraway What's your tattoo gonna say? Happy New Year!

Not fer nuthin, but if you haven't seen the movie "Sing Sing," you should. The best flick I've seen in maybe five years, and maybe the best scene I've seen in 20. #justsayin

“Civilisations die from suicide, not from murder.” ~Arnold Toynbee People...we are doing this to ourselves. We need to act individually, sure, but we need to rethink what an "education" is for now. What conversations about "Why School?" are you starting in your neighborhoods?

“At the end of the day, we have to radically transform society, and we have to do it fast,” he says. That means overhauling politics, policies and institutions, safeguarding food production and the natural world that supports life on Earth. amp-theguardian-com.cdn.ampproject.org/c/s/amp.theg...
