Politics as we know it is dead. We live in a world now where there are two types of people: Those who search for, and believe in, facts and reality. And those who believe that speaking their own version of reality, no matter how false, counts as fact. It's up to each of us to decide which we are.

"The GOP has had incredible success rewriting the history of Jan. 6," says @heidibeirich.bsky.social. As Proud Boys leaders eye political roles, they’re embracing that same narrative—insisting it wasn’t an insurrection. Read more from @willcarless.bsky.social: www.usatoday.com/story/news/p...

ICYMI: I wrote about the grand plans of the four leaders of the Proud Boys, who were tried and convicted for seditious conspiracy but then freed by President Trump:

“For the Proud Boys, it would be difficult for them to legitimize themselves if they continue to rally around the kind of mantra of white supremacy, black inferiority, homophobia, hatred for gays and lesbians and trans folks,”

I interviewed all four of the Proud Boys leaders jailed for seditious conspiracy for the Jan 6 insurrection who are now free. They have lofty plans: Sheriff? Congress? Criminal Justice reformer? Freed Proud Boys leaders have big plans: My LATEST for @usatoday.com www.usatoday.com/story/news/p...

Steve Bannon is upping the ante in the weird hair stakes:

Our country is facing radical, complex, unprecedented change. The media has been devastated by layoffs, greed and constant attacks. America needs us more than ever right now. Support your local news organization. Do it for democracy.

#SanDiego I will be on @kpbssandiego.bsky.social at noon for Midday Edition to talk about the Jan. 6 pardons and my exclusive interview with Henry "Enrique" Tarrio last week in Miami: www.usatoday.com/story/news/p...

#EXCLUSIVE: I flew to Miami to meet with Enrique Tarrio, de-facto leader of the Proud Boys, for his first sit-down interview since being pardoned by President Trump. He had a lot to say, including clarifying what he means by wanting “retribution.” www.usatoday.com/videos/news/...

Another tragic school shooting by an apparent far-right extremist and there’s so much going on that it barely makes the news. But my @USATODAY.com colleagues are on it: Antioch school shooting: What to know about attack in Nashville that left 2 dead

@usatoday.com has a video team standing by at Miami airport to film Enrique Tarrio's return to his home city. Tarrio, Chairman of the Proud Boys, who was sentenced to 22 years in prison for the Jan. 6 attack, is returning home: Watch live here: www.youtube.com/embed/tj1uhj...

100 Proud Boys and their close associates One hundred With a preplanned violent attack on the seat of government including specific plans of “overwhelming police defenses.” Important to understand what just happened: By leading analyst @tomjoscelyn.bsky.social www.justsecurity.org/106689/janua...

From November, and newly relevant: Trump pardons for Jan. 6 rioters could reinvigorate America's far-right extremism: www.usatoday.com/story/news/i...

There's a little stand off between a couple dozen apparent Proud Boys and counter-protestors on the streets of DC for #Inauguration2025 Livestream from the inimitable Ford Fischer www.youtube.com/watch?app=de...

lmao at the idea of getting a FOIA response in four days. You're lucky if you get one ever. I have requests pending that are 15 years old.

Will Carless & Chris Kenning paint a powerfully moving portrait of how the #LAWildfires leave no one untouched—from the unhoused to the wealthy. I stopped several times while reading to share words and images. A woman takes a last pic of her home. A man tries to make sense of the rubble—So well done

Wildfires don’t care how much money you have. My dispatch from the #LAWildfires w/ @chris_kenning looks at how every strata of Los Angeles society was impacted: From unhoused folks to beachfront Malibu homeowners, wildfires hit all of LA society www.usatoday.com/story/news/n...

A @willcarless.bsky.social investigation highlights concerns about extremism in the military. While definitions of extremist activity were updated last year, @heidibeirich.bsky.social warns: "The problem is growing as the government is walking away from this issue." www.usatoday.com/story/news/i...

“In the 90s, we were only finding a handful among all the extremist cases where the individuals had some kind of nexus to the US military and now, per year, we're finding 40 or 50 cases" — @mikeajensen.bsky.social

Recent attacks in New Orleans & Las Vegas, both committed by men w connections to the U.S. military, place new focus on the Pentagon's failing efforts to combat extremism in the ranks. My #LATEST for USA TODAY: www.usatoday.com/story/news/i...

In amongst the smoke, soot and anguish of Los Angeles, i got to meet this legend, former pro surfer Randy Wright, who lives in his truck at Sunset Point in Malibu

Los Angeles’ Pacific Palisades neighborhood is a hellscape

NEW: I've obtained internal Meta docs revealing an array of sample posts that are now allowed under new hate speech rules. Examples include calling children "trannies," “Jews are flat out greedier than Christians," and “immigrants are grubby, filthy pieces of shit” theintercept.com/2025/01/09/f...

Angelinos: I’m headed to the city to help cover the #wildfires. What stories or communities need covering? Send me suggestions and leads. Thanks and stay safe.

NEW: Vegas police named the Cybertruck incident the 1st case of a bombmaker using AI, but a stack of US intel reports obtained by WIRED show domestic extremists have been sharing bootleg AI to aid lone wolf attackers build bombs & stage attacks on the US electric grid. www.wired.com/story/las-ve...

Just landed at LAX and literally came down to land through the smoke from the #palisadesfire

My #Antifa story led to a couple days of harassment and attacks from MAGA people on Twitter/X, and also some more muted attacks and criticism from anti-MAGA people on here. I'm pissing people off. I must be doing something right. eu.usatoday.com/story/news/i...

I was at the US Capitol on Jan. 6. I watched windows being smashed, countless assaults and attacks. A vicious mob mentality, worse than anything I've seen in 25 years reporting on five continents. We nearly lost the republic that day. Make no mistake. A "Day of love" it most certainly was not.

ICYMI: #Antifa view Donald Trump as a fascist. I talked to anti-fascist activists from across the country for this story, to understand what plans the movement has for the incoming Trump term. Protests? Violence? Terrorism? Read my story to find out: usatoday.com/story/news/i...

“‘If shit gets bad enough’ — that’s the operating phrase right there — there’s always going to be a response,” said @dlj.bsky.social , a self-proclaimed anti-fascist and executive director of the One People's Project. “As we say in the Black community: ‘Don't start nothing, won't be nothing.’”

My #LATEST: I spoke to anti-fascist activists, leaders and organizers from across the country to ask them what they have planned for Trump's second term. #Antifa largely considers Trump a fascist. So what action will the movement take? Read my story: usatoday.com/story/news/i...
