We saved PBS from Trump in 2017, and now here we are again

Sometimes when I see an article on our national crisis to which the response is emojis—even very expressive ones—I wonder what emojis would have greeted Hitler in his rise to power. Which is to say, maybe there are more meaningful ways to react to such news.

Selma. The Trump administration pulled funding meant for Selma’s schools, along with $5 million in additional funding for a statewide reading program. www.al.com/educationlab...

Walking down from Glastonbury Tor this morning about 20 minutes after sunrise. Have a fab new week everyone.

Rep. Randy Weber on Newsmax 2 baselessly accuses Jasmine Crockett of Social Security fraud but adds, "I don't know if this is true"

NEW: Donald Trump's strongman bromance with Nayib Bukele is no accident. "President B" is like a beta test of Trump's expansive vision of executive power — defanging courts, intimidating rivals, flouting term limits. w/ @joshgerstein @hassankanu www.politico.com/news/2025/04...

What we all just witnessed had all the earmarks of a criminal conspiracy to deprive Abrego-Garcia of his constitutional rights, as well as an impeachable offense. The fraud scheme was a phony agreement engineered by the US to have Bukele say he lacks power to return Abrego Garcia and he won't do it.

I am calling for a total and complete shutdown of detainees being removed from the United States to foreign prisons until our country's representatives can figure out what is going on.

Just captured the most amazing rainbow I have ever seen!

Trump has just hung the "now open for business sign", saying he'll do specific (tariff) favors for specific companies. CEOs will see massive gains from lobbying, and huge costs from criticizing the White House. It's an effective way to suppress criticism. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/14/b...

a beautiful day

Tayyip Erdogan is another dictator leading a NATO member county.

Harvard redid its whole homepage to push back against the administration’s demands. I mean, this is just a website but I think it’s kind of a great PR move: www.harvard.edu

Its true that America citizens can’t legally be deported. It’s equally clear that this administration doesn’t care about what the law says. www.nbcnews.com/politics/don...

I'll say it again: in a country where due process is individually denied and then broadly eroded and eventually eliminated, being a citizen will not protect you from the terror of this administration.

Boston is where freedom of speech and religion underpinned the founding of this country. Good for Harvard's leaders for finding the courage to stand against modern-day tyrants.

The internet becomes more tolerable once you realize that 99% of the people who are being assholes to you online have never actually engaged with your work and have no plans to.

Per this Bloomberg chart, the US bond yield rollercoaster continued today with an 11 basis drop in the 10-year. This was accompanied by 0.6-1.1% gains in the major US stock market indices. The appreciated return of relative market calm hides a division of views on yields — between those ..: 1 of 2

Grabbed at his appointment to become a citizen. Is this who we are? 😕🇺🇸

Cornell has joined the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities and eight other universities in filing suit against the Department of Energy for unlawful cuts to negotiated federal grants. Full details here: storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

What an inspiring group of young journalists. I spent the morning meeting with the winners of the Dan Rather Medals for News and Guts, awarded by The University of Texas Moody College of Comminications. Congratulations to all the winners. Details in the first comment.

Bookmarking this valuable tracker on student visa revocations, from @insidehighered.com As of right now, IHE database shows that more than 1,000 international students & recent graduates have had their legal status changed by State Dept. www.insidehighered.com/news/global/...

If the U.S. government is going to take the position that, once removed from the United States, folks can’t be brought back, then it sure seems to me that federal courts should be reflexively and categorically barring *all* removals until they’re 100 percent certain that the removals are lawful.

Easy Answer: STOP PAYING THE SON OF A BITCH for his ugly prison! Trump Administration Live Updates: U.S. and El Salvador Won’t Return Man Who Was Mistakenly Deported www.nytimes.com/live/2025/04...

“Neither Harvard nor any other private university can allow itself to be taken over by the federal government,” Harvard attorneys wrote to federal officials. “Accordingly, Harvard will not accept the government’s terms.” If you’ve never given to Harvard, GIVE NOW! search.app/M76p3GzTmMuc...

It is literally our fucking purpose here on Earth, at the very least.

When you have a $50 billion endowment, this is the way to go. Also, believe Harvard refuses to be bullied by a convict who calls the European Union (EU) a country like Canada. www.thecrimson.com/article/2025...

We haven’t reached bottom yet. Because there is no bottom to his moral depravity.

Guess what time it is? It’s matzoh brei time! #Passover

Under pressure from Trump, Case Western Reserve University ordered the removal of web links related to DEI. The webmaster refused. “We've got to stop caving for something as unimportant as your bottom line," said the webmaster.

At least one US president cares to denounce this attack.

He’s threatening media companies who are critical of him. He’s talking about sending Americans to foreign prisons. He’s signing executive orders to investigate former staff members who spoke out against him. He’s defying the Supreme Court. Don’t you see what’s happening here?

For those of us who know this is the case....it is nice to see survey data supporting reality. Tariffs as an economic development strategy is pure foolishness. www.cnbc.com/2025/04/14/t...

The administration that called Canada “the 51st state” and said “we’re going to get” Greenland is suddenly cowed by sovereignty.

Pam Bondi is helping Trump defy the courts and become a dictator. If the Bezos Washington Post wasn't under Trump's thumb, it would apologize for endorsing Bondi as AG.

The Admin is continually missing the point in the Abrego Garcia case that it has committed a constitutional violation and is obligated to remedy it. It’s not some freestanding order re foreign policy. The courts’ presumption of the Exec good faith brings a reciprocal oblig to comply w/ lawful orders.

Great job everyone

In any democracy, the lawyers are the guardrails. With America heading toward autocratic rule, we see how some firms have chosen. But it isn’t too late for others in the profession to choose to keep our democracy. I challenge all my students: keep the faith! news.bloomberglaw.com/us-law-week/...

Letter from Dem Senator Chris Van Hollen (MD) requesting a meeting with Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele To discuss MD father Kilmar Abrego Garcia's return "If Kilmar is not home by midweek – I plan to travel to El Salvador this week to check on his condition and discuss his release."
