Absolutely, 100%

For the third time this century the government of the USA is about to get involved in a situation it has not taken the trouble properly to understand, which it thinks it thinks it can quickly resolve by using limited military force. To learn none of the lessons of Iraq and Afghanistan is criminal.

That's a shame meanwhile Gaza has no Universities left. Israel blew them all to smithereens along with most of their staff and a fair few of their students.

20+ years ago, results of a 'War Game' set up for the Atlantic (reported by me) showed that US attacks on Iran would backfire more sweepingly than land wars in Iraq or even Vietnam. The fundamentals have not changed. DO NOT DO THIS. Or even rant about it. www.theatlantic.com/magazine/arc...

I'm beginning to see that I will never be able to visit the USA again. Sad to say....

The self-defense tweet was no fluke. The German chancellor seems to construct a self-defense argument rather than from an imminent attack from Iran's non-compliance with IAEA inspections and a declaration to double down on enrichment... www.tagesschau.de/inland/merz-...

I stand by my argument that we absolute do not NEED a Marine Corps. There is nothing the Marine Corps does that is unique or that the other arms (predominantly the Army) can't do (and usually ARE doing.) The Marine Corps is a PR agency with artillery.

Welcome to Trump's America. Home of enslaved and land of cowards.

The EU fails to see a key point. At the moment, it's all stick towards Russia. Smart diplomacy offers a carrot. What carrot is the EU offering Russia. Perhaps a basic free trade deal??? Conditions of course.

Have just received hard copies of my book from Cambridge UP. It's about the ordinary people who funded the Irish Catholic church between the end of the Famine and independence. It takes in social, economic, religious, emotions history and much else besides...

In this vivid biography, John G. Turner presents Joseph Smith as a consummate religious entrepreneur and innovator, a man both flawed and compelling. Learn more at yalebooks.com.

Perhaps, once we have eliminated the rewards of hard work and learning a skill, and the joy of accidental discovery, and the inspiration that came from who-knows-where, we will have been perfectly optimised. But I'd rather be alive.

Highly doubtful. But probably nice to claim it! Very Trump like.......

This conflict is costing Israel. Despite all the talking heads on this, we are unlikely to see regime change in Iran. I worry more about Jordan. The kingdom's interception of Iranian missiles cannot be going down well there.

Having visited, I agree... www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2025/06...

The people who had the biggest impact on the development of my academic career were Brian Bond, Hugh Cecil, Richard Holmes, John Pimlott, Peter Simkins and Edward M. Spiers. Only the last two are still with us. I am grateful to all of them.
