Putin planned to take Kyiv in three days, but he couldn't take Kyiv in three years. The only way Putin wins now—the only way he finally succeeds in destroying Ukraine’s sovereignty—is by persuading Ukraine’s allies to abandon Ukraine. www.theatlantic.com/internationa...

Midweek homemade teriyaki FTW

Had a fun solo-authored piece accepted that I began working on back in 2020, inspired and encouraged by colleagues such as Juliette De Maeyer and Aleks Kaminska — more details later ! :)

Object lesson in why throwing even a bit of sand in gears can help. OSC won TRO last week preventing OSC's own firing. While TRO's in place, OSC rules on firings across govt. Fired employees usu have to show they used admin process before suing in fed ct. Now they have any hope of showing they did.

Margaret Sullivan gets it. What seems like a tiny flap over what to call a body of water is really about something big : a clear violation of the first amendment—and the extent to which news organizations will stick together in each other’s defense, or just comply for the sake of their own access.

"Me and the boys used to sit around drinking beer and telling racist and sexist jokes, ending it all with a proud Nazi salute. Now, the woke mob wants to take all that away from us."

God these people are such total morons. We're finally learning what happens when you just take the dumbest, meanest, people on the planet, convince them they're geniuses, give them money, and then give them power. It ain't pretty.

This reads like the opening paragraph of a novel so bleakly dystopian you'd put it down after five pages

Still having such cognitive dissonance over all this, but this much is clear: Like other forms of red-baiting & McCarthyism in the past, the witch hunt's purported aims are often false pretenses, serving as proxy battles for bigger ideological wars. They're trying to bring media companies to heel.

It should not be radical for the American Bar Association to say that it supports the rule of law. But right now, it is. Let's see some other orgs taking a similar stance.

Lead story in @nytimes.com tonight speaks to one small way protests help shape national discussion: photos. Without protest, how would a news org visualize this debate? Treasury, computers, DOGE? Many feature Musk smiling. Here we see the drama of public opposition, which also helps justify story.
