I'm covering NOAA and the National Weather Service for @bloomberg.com. If you'd like to talk, please reach out. Call or text on the free Signal app: lgrosen.03 Email: lrosenthal21[at]bloomberg.net Submit a tip: www.bloomberg.com/tips/

The AMS is temporarily opening its career services to all who need them, regardless of membership status, and offering dues waivers and meeting registration fee reductions for those impacted by job loss due to changes in the government. Read more: bit.ly/4gRiHAk

The winter weather advisory has been cancelled for most of the #RVA area. It continues for portions of Virginia south and east of Petersburg. #vawx

Forecast verification for this snowstorm. It should be noted that it was still snowing in SE VA at the end of the period NWS Wakefield's maps cover. I ended up severely overestimating out west because the second wave was weak. For the #rva area and SE, this verified pretty well though. #vawx

A winter weather advisory is in effect until 6:00pm for much of central and eastern Virginia, including #RVA. Scattered snow showers could add an additional inch or two of snow before the moisture finally moves out this evening. #vawx

You may be wondering why there's a lot of melting happening despite air temps being in the 20s. Since it's late winter, the sun is at a higher angle. This increased sunlight is causing the melting. It will still be in the 20s this evening, so refreezing will likely happen before sunset. #rva #vawx

Snow is moving out of the #RVA metro, though heavy snow continues S and E of Petersburg and in the Hampton Roads and Eastern Shore regions. Temps will remain bitterly cold tonight and below freezing all day tomorrow w/scattered snow showers, so the snow will stick around. #vawx

Heavy snow continues throughout southeastern VA from #RVA south and east. The radar shows ice in Hampton Roads but it is in fact extremely heavy snow. Heavy snow will continue in the RVA area for another few hours before becoming lighter. #vawx

Starting to see snow sticking to even treated surfaces now as temps drop. Traveling tonight and tomorrow is not advised. #RVA #vawx

Snow still to come. The low pressure system is beginning to coalesce off the coast, and this should cause snow to build back inland during the next few hours. The focus of the snow will still be in S/SE VA and E NC. Still have over 18 hours of snow left. Roads will freeze tonight. #rva #vawx

Here's a small list of the ways you directly benefit from the National Weather Service on a daily basis. The agency is a public good that issues critical, lifesaving forecasts and alerts. We must save it from indiscriminate and irreparable damage. www.damweather.com/2025/02/the-...

"Last call" for tomorrow/Thurs snow. There'll be a bit more light snow Thurs evening. The thing to note is this is a *dry* snow. "Typical" snow to liquid ratios are 10" snow = 1" liquid, but this will be closer to 15:1. Models typically assume 10:1, and that can give you wonky numbers. #RVA #vawx

The winter storm warning area has been expanded to include the #RVA metro area, effective from 6:00am Wednesday through 6:00pm Thursday. #vawx

"Second call" for Wed noon-ish through Thurs early PM. Mesoscale guidance suggests this storm will have more moisture to work with, and the main low will track a bit further north, so the band of heaviest snow has been nudged north. Confidence is still low-medium. #rva #vawx

Mass impending layoffs for folks in NWS & NOAA is not only abhorrent, but also threatens public safety, the economy, and the scientific community. Weather and climate don’t care who you are and where you live - these organizations and the people behind them keep us safe… 1/3

The 12Z run of the 3km NAM shows a big shift northward in the low pressure system's forecast track, which would serve to dramatically increase snow totals in central Virginia, including #RVA. Need to see if other models follow suit before making changes though. #vawx

A winter storm warning is now in effect for portions of southern and southeastern Virginia, including Hampton Roads, from 10 am Wednesday through 6 pm Thursday. Heavy snow with amounts of at least 6" - more further to the SE - is likely. A winter storm watch remains in effect for the #RVA area.

A winter storm watch is now in effect for much of central and southeastern Virginia from 6 am Wednesday through 6 pm Thursday. The primary threat is heavy snow which will accumulate quickly as temperatures drop into the upper 20s. #RVA #vawx

"First call" map for Wed early PM to Thurs AM: Signals for strong coastal storm have mostly collapsed as the two "pieces of energy" aren't going to sync up. The track is also much further S, and so is the heavier snow. Still looking at heavy snow in Hampton Rds and E NC, modest snow in #RVA. #vawx

The rotten orange and the man-child are planning to shut down NOAA and the NWS. That would be catastrophic for not only the United States but also a pretty big chunk of the whole world.

...uh, whoa.

Looking again at Wed/Thurs snow event. Too soon to speculate on snowfall totals, but looks like the two "pieces of energy" that will coalesce into this storm aren't going to sync up just right. Heaviest snow would be further S/E. This could still change as we're still a ways away. #rva #vawx

47 does not care about you

I think there's a fairly good chance we resume the Daytona 500 at around the 7:00-7:30 mark. Rain is breaking up as it moves through. #NASCAR #Daytona500

If you're hoping for things at the #Daytona500 to get going before the rain, you're out of luck. Because Trump decided to make a huge spectacle, heavy rain and gusty winds will likely further delay the start of the race. Don't like it? Blame Trump. #NASCAR

Not looking great weatherwise for the #Daytona500, with heavy rain and gusty winds less than an hour away from the track. The good news is there's basically nothing behind this area of rain, so I think chances are good they get the whole race in today once the track is dry. #NASCAR

Sunday morning weather brief for RVA. Winds picking up. Thunder possible as rain comes through, 60s after rain ends. Some branches and limbs down, isolated trees down, scattering of outages. River has flooded, but not expected to reach water treatment plant (that's at 11 feet above flood stage)

The signals for snow on Wed/Thurs remain quite strong. While it's too soon to speculate on amounts, this setup is your run-of-the-mill coastal storm where the heaviest precip will be close to the low center and therefore, further S/E. #RVA and parts of the DC metro could see high amounts. #vawx

A high wind warning is in effect for eastern Virginia along and east of I-95 from 9am to 3pm Sunday. Sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph, with gusts as high as 60 mph, are possible. These winds could bring down trees and power poles weakened by last week's snow and ice. #RVA #vawx

A brief warmup is in store for #RVA this weekend as a frontal system moves through. Heavy rain is possible Saturday night into Monday. Much colder air will push in afterward and potentially set the stage for a major snow event for eastern Virginia on Wednesday and Thursday. #vawx

The amount of brazenly stupid, destructive decisions being willfully made at the highest levels of government right now is not surprising in many ways but is no less shocking. We are 1000% less safe and secure than we were a month ago. But at least Congress has some Good Tweets™️ scheduled!

FYI: Notable chance of an outbreak of severe weather on Saturday (Feb 15). Early season activity in this part of the country aligns with what we'd see during La Niña conditions. Well above normal sea surface temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico will add more fuel to environmental conditions.

The Western Pacific looks like midseason rather than February in terms of number of disturbances, with invests 93W, 94W, and 95W out there. However, it IS still February, so none of them are expected to develop significantly.
