I’ll try a pagan friend, thought I, since Christian kindness has proved but hollow courtesy.

hi everyone. i usually don’t do this but i’m struggling financially and it’s becoming a real burden especially with necessary expenses as a student (food, gas, rent, etc). if you enjoy my content at ALL and want to help out, my venmo is astrojaz. you’re not obligated to give me anything of course 🥹

Was delighted to see this one which I have read about in books. A figurine of Buddha made in #Pakistan and deposited in #Sweden around the start of the ninth century #medievalsky

#Vikings on TV tend to have a dark wild-looking aesthetic but finds from 10th century #Sweden suggest male interests in colourful fashions, silk, shiny buttons, & fancy hats - all to show status, something also backed up in textual accounts #medievalsky #britishmuseum

Those familiar with early Christian monastic literature know that there probably were female ascetics or boskoi who wore chains and enclosed themselves, but this is the first known grave of one. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

My 6-year-old is playing tattoo parlour. She made 20 tattoos to choose from. Now I have a butterfly on my neck, a skull and crossbones on my left hand, and alocorn on my right hand. Each cost $1. "Pretend it hurts," she says. ☠️🦄🦋

"I wish he had said something before he left, my dear friend. Do you think if he had, I would have deterred him from his path? Though he thought really highly of me But do you think he ever got to know the real me?" ~Maithilisharan Gupt (1886-1964) writing in the voice of the Buddha's wife Yasodhara

“I went around the corner to see if spring was there.” “Did you find it?” asked Toad. “No,” said Frog. “There was only an old worm asleep on a tree stump.”

So, my takeaway from the last three weeks is that I can either worry about the downfall of our democracy or I can plan and cook dinner. I simply do not have the energy or headspace to do both.

Next time I go to a coffee shop here in the US I'll have to order myself a Canadiano! ☕🇨🇦

There are a number of kings I would consider serving: High King Peter the Magnificent, King Elessar, the Victorious Fighting Buddha the Money King, Christ Pantocrator. Trump ain't one of them. In fact, I can list more kings I would never serve than kings I would. And kings are not "gods on earth."*

It was an honor to sign the guest book in the home of Anne Frank. I was here as a younger man and thought about her life as a dark chapter of history. Today, I can’t help but think of her story as one of caution. Our world is fragile, and it’s incumbent on us not to break it.

"instead of cultivating enmity towards the Chinese leaders responsible for the ruthless suppression of the Tibetan people, I prayed for them to become friends [...]: 'May they attain the wisdom eye discerning right and wrong, and may they abide in the glory of friendship and love'" - 14th Dalai Lama

"Literature, contemplative solitude, Latin America, Asia, Zen, Islam, etc., all these things come together in my life. It would be madness for me to attempt to create a monastic life for myself by excluding all these. I would be less a monk." -- Thomas Merton (Fr. Mary Louis)🪔 #ThomasMerton

For many people in the US, today is Presidents' Day, but where I live in SD, many of us observe Treaty Day instead. As Article 6 of the Constitution says, "all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land."

Now that's a chair every writer should have!

One of my TBRs for 2025! "In Charlotte Wood’s novel 'Stone Yard Devotional,' an atheist burrows into herself while staying in a convent, and contemplates how to live without causing harm." #booksky📚💙 www.nytimes.com/2025/02/10/b...

Honoring Elizabeth Peratrovich, Tlingit civil rights activist, today and her powerful words: "Asking you to give me equal rights implies that they are yours to give. Instead, I must demand that you stop trying to deny me the rights all people deserve."

Very happy my first-grade daughter sees a picture of a torii ⛩️ and says, "That's where you lived, Daddy!"
