Prediction: the "Trump as God Emperor from WH40K" memes of the last decade are folded seamlessly into a new genre of "Trump as Pope" memes to form a sort of syncretic WH40K-themed hyper-American War Catholicism. Initially they play it off as ironic trolling, but soon they drop the pretense.

I realize in practice they end up agreeing, but in theory there ought to be deep, unbridgeable disagreements between the "we only need STEM; every worker is a cog in the machine" techbro libertarian conservatives and the "RETVRN to classical art and culture" social conservatives.

Yeah I do think the “teenage boy” in these discussions is a pretty transparent stand in for the anxieties of adults.

And in this house Socrates was a hero!

To be a good person—unlike the techbro weirdos—you must have a broad liberal arts education, so study philosophy, like Thiel, or humanistic social theory, like Karp, or be engaged with the world as a Journalism major, like Luckey, or at least keep reading history, like Zucke—look I’ll come in again

The idea that education is intended for girls and disadvantages boys is beyond ridiculous. Look at the history of education and how girls and women were prevented from accessing it. Girls are still penalized today for showing too many inches of skin because it’s a “distraction” to the boys

The average American has three friends

I'm not being funny, but the entire world is organised around the interests of men. The idea that women have to give back some of the crumbs that have been brushed off the table for us to make men feel less sad is the bleakest thing imaginable.

The person in charge of 'story-telling' at Labour works out of Policy Exchange, a Tufton Street outlet whose anti-trans stance is so extreme even the Sunday Times is embarrassed to carry it. The Right's takeover of Labour is complete. politicshomecom.cmail20.com/t/t-e-gpyhdt...

The people of Australia kicked those Trump copycat-extraction-loving, trans-queer-Indigenous-immigrant-hating weirdos and cretins to the kerb and then some.

Losing Section 230 would end social media as we know it.

genuinely so true ive made this exact point before when i encounter the word palimpsest in a book i KNOW the author has a similar aesthetic sensibility to me

I miss the invite-only critical theory online library with collections that's probably gone for ever

You know N95? That’s a NIOSH standard. Without NIOSH, there is no one overseeing the production of American masks, to protect against wildfire smoke or the next pandemic (or this one). As for foreign-made KN95 and KF94 masks, well, they’re subject to tariffs… They want you to die.

Poor St George, killing a dragon is easy but she's 8 months on oestrogen and still hasn't managed to come out at work

Akira Kurosawa on writing

In the hellish regime in the 70s and 80s in Argentina the babies of the disappeared were given to the generals or others in the upper echelons of the regime.

a gay bar in Pittsburgh was raided by state police last night for no disclosed reason except a "compliance check" qburgh.com/p-town-raide...

One of those days where I spend too much attention worrying if I have made a fool of myself in the eyes of my friends and senior colleagues

lawyers are always saying things are pursuant to other things. you never really hear that anywhere else

Aaron David Miller wrote this two weeks before October 7th.

This whole "we will out-fash the fash because we're too lame, cowardly and jaded to lead on the issues that all of our constituents actually care about" routine sucks.

Sometimes, people really do need to realise that what they're doing makes them a bad person. The force with which many will resist this conclusion merely highlights how significant it is.

Australian Labor is winning so big that the leader of the Green Party is losing his Melbourne seat. This is why Green parties always have two leaders, you need a backup in case the long dreaded reverse Pasokification finally happens

It is deeply weird that only after a sustained years-long campaign to deprive trans people of every right enjoyed by cis people did the Guardian ask someone from a womens' refuge if they had ever had problems resulting from trans women using their services & got the reply 'Never, in fifteen years"

watching other anglosphere nations elect uninspiring technocrats

the pope dying is actually extremely important to members of the clergy in lower zones of the church. as the pope's spiritual body sinks into the deep, it brings an infusion of liturgical and clerical nutrients that benthic bishops, priests and even deacons can feed on for months on end

Just what this site needs. More hall monitoring.

The author's example of making good citizens vs. being ideological: "I would rather my fellow citizens understand why it is wrong to kidnap babies and grandmothers than to be fluent in the subtleties of postcolonialism." He frames Israeli grievance as non-ideological and Palestinian as ideological

the actual question is kinda moot at this point because government overreach has politicized the classroom by default. your professor and your classmates are being deported. budgets are being cut. research lines and curricula are being censored....

Who needs evidence and logic when you have ressentiment and a STEM degree?

With all due respect, computer science is to academia what an ayahuasca retreat is to psychology.

I personally think it's a very political decision to put a terrifying spotlight on one teaching fellow who wasn't even the prof of the class, who sent one personal thing in an email about a vigil they were going to -- are you going to publish a NYT piece about every student who makes a mistake?

once again stumbling ass-backwards right into their rhetorical trap 🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡

deep cultural bleakness right here
