What's the funniest dinosaur name? (Not something like Tyrannasaurus Chex, the tragic predator with arms too short to reach his cereal spoon to his mouth. But a real, scientifically accurate name that's just funny to see or read?)

Really like this quote from Kepler Interactive's CEO, and think it shows in their games. Those same few influences being so pervasive is why a lot of pop culture seems infantilising. www.gamesindustry.biz/how-kepler-i...

You can see how we got to the Virtual Boy (1995) when this kind of display was hot a decade prior

Grand Theft... Hamlet? I did not know this was a thing. But here that thing is. mailchi.mp/gameplayarts...

Dear Internet People of the West Coast: Last time I was in L.A., I took a bus into downtown from outside the city. How far does any kind of public transit extend beyond the city (which itself is this massive sprawl, I know)? Just thinking about places to stay for an upcoming possible trip.

I love how everyone's like "Man, Nintendo's been playing it safe this gen. I miss their Weird Wii U/3DS era stuff" and meanwhile they turned their detachable controllers into a Exercise RPG that's sold over 15 million copies and just released an alarm that tracks your movements to make coin sounds

Tomorrow would be better. But I'll take next week.

My dudes have been playing Minecraft (Wii U) in split-screen, but my Pro Controller (which sat unused for years) needed to be plugged in to keep a charge. So I got my original 3DS, took out the CTR-003 battery, put it in the controller, & wa-bam, it works! The simplest fix but I feel so fix-it-y.

I own all of these digitally and am not one for Physical Deluxe Editions BUT...... that little bespoke Tetris Handheld, oooh

Love this idea from @geekdadgamer.bsky.social and his team. A fresh way to discover new games and tap into the brains of some of your favorite voices in the industry. Check it out: www.kickstarter.com/projects/lud...

I go to a monthly game swap near me and there definitely seems to be a growing interest in old machines. It's always been there but more and more people seem to be wanting to opt-out of the current ecosystem and mess around w/ previous gens. www.theguardian.com/games/2025/f...

There's a certain satisfaction, when grading a student paper, in going back to your end-note & adding "really" in front of the "good work on this" when you want to emphasize that, yes, this 82 out of 100 is, in fact, a good grade for above-average work & not the indictment you think it is.

ok, I have been sitting on this link for a little while now, and while it is not absolutely *imperative* for most people to understand Jungian projection/scapegoating on an international scale, *I* found it helpful, so maybe someone else will academyofideas.com/2018/02/carl...

Hello! Until I land that lucrative book contract with publisher-funded website, here is my free online landing page. about.me/jonirwinis

I'm glad to see someone's still carrying the torch of embedding deep thoughts and world news into a half-winking review of a videogame

Important news from @stephentotilo.bsky.social about the further unraveling of all that is good open.substack.com/pub/stephent...

Read this by @lukeplunkett.com about the apathetic languor of Modern Day Sports Games. It comes down to a lack of competition. Used to be 3 or 4 different games per sport, all by big publishers. Each unique! Now we're stuck w/ EA or 2K pushing their annual update. aftermath.site/ea-fc-madden...

This is the problem with books about videogames. Actual real work by McGonigal and Bissell gets shelved next to Pokemon/Minecraft guides.

Fascinating to see a master of the craft (interviewing) flailing and falling against a somewhat stubborn subject. But his honesty saves it. David Marchese, in two parts, talking w/ Denzel Washington. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/08/m...

Nintendo's approach with Switch was to bring as much of their prior system's "DNA" to one device — so the mouse control of Switch 2 being a probable way to add DS / Wii U to the mix seems like one solid way to continue that approach!

Here is what Tecmo Bowl 2025 simulated as the results of tonight's game. Seems like an unlikely points total, but this game has been shockingly accurate in the past. 🙃

I saw this show last night in ATL. It was, indeed, a rollicking good blues band with occasional tortured singing by Mr. Murray, and every bit as memorable as that implies.

As someone who prayed to all possible gods that movie theaters would survive the pandemic, I'm just so happy we can even have this conversation. (And, as the author Marie Solis suggests, there's a lot more going on than just rude or "inappropriate" laughter.) www.nytimes.com/2025/01/14/s...

A good weekend read: @zacharyhsmall.bsky.social talking to Will "Don't Call Me God" Wright about The Sims and why ants are more resilient than humans www.nytimes.com/2025/02/04/a...

By & large, most books are superior to human beings.

Frankly a silly value here. Just silly. Basically buy one, get 26 free. Help a good cause and bask in the delights.

8 years ago @claytonpurdom.bsky.social eulogized Miiverse on the eve of Switch's launch. It felt so odd & bespoke, but when we chatted for the article I realized how natural of an evolution it was for Nintendo to include what Iwata once called an "empathy network." www.avclub.com/the-time-has...

So far 2025 is the year of experiencing Masterpieces from the Recent Past. Right now I'm: -reading The Dutch House -playing Dead Cells -listening to Black City by Matthew Dear It all feels right given the moment we're in

What's the word for that feeling when you realize people half your age are trying very hard and spending a lot of money to recreate the experience that you had but they never did? This, after sliding down a r/CRTgaming rabbit hole

Exactly 100 years ago, F. Scott Fitzgerald saw it coming: "They were careless people...they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made."
