Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.

There are only two options here: 1) Hold the line against the illegal & catastrophic way Trump–Musk are destroying the government, including if that means shutting it down. 2) Endorsing, ratifying, and acquiescing to it as a valid and permanent state of affairs. There is no in-between.

#AvengersAcademy The best quote for our horrendous time: grab the broom, crank the tunes, and keep charging.

If I were a Democrat, and I saw Trump do a purge of high-level generals who were women and people of color and wouldn't be "yes men," I wouldn't vote to advance JD Vance's college friend for Secretary of the Army. And yet....16 Democrats just did so

USDS became DOGE, which Trump & Musk have claimed is run by Musk, and yet the Trump admin has scrupulously avoided identifying the USDS administrator or what Musk's role actually is. There's no rational reason for this shell game apart from extensive illegal activity.

oh is someone learning that conservatives definitionally do not contribute culturally

UPDATE: The charges against her have been dropped “in the interest of justice” (she bit one of the brownshirts that assaulted her) and the private security firm has lost their license to operate. I hope she sues them into oblivion.

With due respect, Senator, federal employees are not “his staff.” The whole damned problem here is that federal employees in no legal sense report to Elon Musk.

The US openly siding with Russia against Ukraine at the UN: Not surprising at this point, but utterly shocking.

Every American should be aware that proportional representation and multipartyism is what makes it possible for pro-democracy forces to unite against extremists. A two party system is uniquely terrible at this

JUDGE COLLEEN KOLLAR-KOTELLY: Is there an administrator of DOGE at the present time? GOVERNMENT COUNSEL: I don’t know the answer to that

Grade A Kremlin talking points

Speaking of "intent of the Framers," we don't have to guess what they'd think about the Secretary of War saying he's going to use the enormous standing army to break the law.

There’s surely a lot of frustrating stuff about any bureaucracy—meeting with stakeholders in advance, circulating draft after draft, respecting chains of authority, getting legal to sign off, etc.—but there’s no better illustration of why it exists than Elon Musk’s month of chaotic destruction.

He's terrorizing federal workers. Some agencies have instructed employees to answer the email, some have advised against it, and some unions have said to hold tight for further instructions. All the while, no one is sure the right thing to do to keep their job.

NO KINGS NO NAZIS gets you like 80% approval and does a solid 60% of what we want to do

The guy who essentially just won the next chancellorship, Friedrich Merz, has been doing a press tour for the past week or so talking about how America under Trump can’t be trusted and promising to investigate Musk for meddling in the German election.

Suggested changes: The far-right AfD, backed by JD Vance and Elon Musk, was rejected by 80 percent of voters, exit polls suggest. Mainstream parties plan to form a coalition without them because voters don't want them to govern.

“We fired all the guards at the bank so they’re not roadblocks to anything that happens.”

No kings

Flashbacks to the stats in BG3 Early Access where almost every single player pursued at least one romance. People may not ADMIT to wanting sex and romance in games, but their behavior says otherwise, basically every time.

I snapped this on 3/27/19. Seven days later, the Trump administration canceled my remote work and moved my job 2,300 miles away and I had to move or be fired. Three months later, they investigated my podcast. The rest, as they say, is history.

This is the ultimate dick boss move from Musk - except he isn’t even the boss, he’s just a dick.

Hold on. Have they considered if a 20-year-old cybercriminal says "but Elon says you have to!" Surely that carries the force of law, right?

i truly am my mother’s son

Another example of how these attacks on higher ed are impacting more than a university campus or a ‘college town’; they impact society.

This is precisely the definition of authoritarian populism: elections confer a mandate to govern that transcends constitutional constraints. The “leader” as the embodiment of the general will. Problem: constitutional democracy demands horizontal accountability.

To my Republican colleagues: are you ok with this? Our dedicated workforce has been harassed, maligned and decimated by Trump-Musk. You have been silent. When will just two of you have the courage to stand with us and support the law and the public servants who work for America?

Firing all of the JAGs (Judge Advocates General)—the top lawyers in each service branch—is just as bad as, if not worse than, firing (most of) the Joint Chiefs.

The last failsafe of any republican form of government is that the military is loyal to the constitution and rule of law over a particular leader. Cross that line, and you get Venezuela today and every dictatorship in history.

“In some ways that’s even more chilling than firing the four stars,” Rosa Brooks, a professor at Georgetown Law. “It’s what you do when you’re planning to break the law: you get rid of any lawyers who might try to slow you down.” By NYT Greg Jaffe www.nytimes.com/2025/02/22/u...

Wow…I had to double, triple check to make sure this tweet from Senator Smith was real. Rare to see a US Senator tweet like this. Not complaining, just surprising.

A lot of comments on this like "why isn't anyone doing anything?" And I feel the same way, but the hardest thing to be is the first person to stand up. You're alone. It's scary. There are more of us than them though and when one stands, it emboldens the rest and soon the one is many.

Elon’s mass harassment email to all federal employees underscores the importance of having unions to represent workers against abusive management.

FFS New York Times. They’re not *his generals. Unbelievable

"Science fiction lends itself readily to imaginative subversion of any status quo. Bureaucrats and politicians, who can't afford to cultivate their imaginations, tend to assume it's all ray-guns and nonsense, good for children." - Ursula K. Le Guin (2012) [Anthology idea: Ray-guns and Nonsense]

If only we had someone, a Chief Justice so to speak, who was in precisely the position to stand up for an independent judiciary by publicly refusing the request on behalf of all judicial branch employees. Oh well!

I've spent the last few years defending CBC from Poilievre's "Defund the CBC" messaging but this? This is indefensible. Why don't people realize that "Just asking Qs" is playing into Trump's hand? When even the CBC is doing clickbait about Canada being invaded, we are in dire, dire straights.

Anyone justifying national Democrats' current strategy to you is committing massive, possibly world historic political malpractice, including the elected officials themselves.

Democrats are fundamentally misunderstanding the moment: We're not asking them to be *legislators* right now. We need them to be *politicians.* There's nothing to be done about the legislative situation. They're right about that. But there's PLENTY to be done as politicians.

Two weeks from now the crew of a nuclear submarine are going to see this email and the subsequent one firing them all.

It is insanely obvious that Elon Musk is illegally exercising the powers of a principal officer of the United States in violation of the appointments clause

I don’t know how many different ways to say that agency personnel don’t work for Elon. They don’t have to report to Elon. They report to their agency leadership, which reports to the President.

I find this very moving: a 10-year-old Ukrainian boy who moved to the West of Ireland 2 years ago as a refugee, speaking in Irish of his love of playing Irish music

i finally understand why the victorians found ankles scandalous and sexy

The Trump regime is trying to pressure Zelenskyy to leave Ukraine and force him into exile in France, this is part of an ongoing US / Russia ploy to force a surrender and plunder the country's resources. #StandWithUkraine

“If you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.” A classic quote from Malcolm X, who was assassinated 60 years ago today.
