We are excited to announce a new faculty position here in Cambridge, for researchers in computational and/or theoretical biology, based jointly in Genetics and Mathematics. Come and join us! Happy to answer questions about research, teaching and working here. www.jobs.cam.ac.uk/job/50414/

Bitte am Sonntag wählen gehen! Noch nie war eine Wahl so wichtig für Deutschlands Zukunft. #Btw2025

Tomorrow in the NYT: I voted for Donald Trump because I hate the people he hates and wanted to see them suffer. Now that I am suffering, why can’t you find it in your heart to be sympathetic? RUDE

As others have noted, the life of Carl Bosch is worth a look in these times. Fritz Haber demonstrated that nitrogen could be reduced to ammonia, but Bosch’s work turned that into a technology that changed the world with sudden new supplies of fertilizer (and of explosives). (1/8)

Why does @weare.rladies.org have less than 1000 followers? We can do better than this #rstats folks. It is a terrific account to follow because every week not only we get to know a new member of the #RLadies community but we also get to read their R favorites, tips, and jokes.

“ERC succeeds because it’s different. Its simple, tailored procedures allow Europe’s best researchers to thrive. Bureaucratic processes designed for other programmes should not be imposed on it.” @marialep.bsky.social spoke up for an independent ERC with a doubled budget today @europarl.europa.eu

Be not afraid The UK’s GDP is 50% bigger than Russia’s and GDP per capita three times as great (as with most EU countries). The economic power of the EU alone (without the UK) is EIGHT times larger than Russia. The EU is a superpower. Russia is not. And should not be treated like one

It’s sickening how weak-kneed every foundation in US is. Where are your principles?

Finally something/someone worth posting on Bluesky: Europe must stand strong behind Ukraine and Zelensky and resist Trump’s love affair with imperialist dictators and plutocrats (the very rich). It’s our only hope.

This is probably the most accurate take.

To US colleagues who have lost or are in imminent danger of losing their jobs: please DM whether we can accommodate your research.

#MSC

On January 6th, 1995, my (now ex) wife and I boarded a flight from Heathrow to JFK on a one way ticket. We had two suitcases and about $900 in cash - this was everything we owned and we were moving to the US. We thought it was maybe for 2-3 years. I had visited the US once, for a conference, and

sharing some love today

This is almost too stupid to comment on, but I hope it's clear to everyone what's going on here: authoritarians bully you into doing little shit like this as a way to train you to comply, to grease the skids for bigger things. You talk yourself into a little thing, the next thing is easier.

Rdatasets is a collection of 2300 free and documented datasets in CSV format. It's a great resource for teaching and exploration! The new `get_dataset()` function from the {marginaleffects} 📦 allows you to search and load them directly in #Rstats. vincentarelbundock.github.io/Rdatasets/ar...

Hey guys meta announced a new policy where they send a killer to get you so be sure to go to settings>my account > killer> disable killer to turn that off

Just your friendly reminder that there are alternatives to Mapping apps owned by big companies... One of them is called OpenStreetMap -- it is crowdsourced and the data is open and non-commercial. Via the API, there are downloadable app versions for your phone. www.openstreetmap.org/about

I just uploaded the first version of {{exactplot}} to github.com/const-ae/exa... 🎉 It produces figures with consistent font size, Latex labels, and millimeter-perfect layouting. It's an alternative to patchwork with less elegant syntax but much more flexibility. #rstats

Made some slides for scientists to talk about what's been happening & what we should do next. There are probably many people better qualified than me to talk about these issues. If that's you, please, please, please consider holding some virtual advocacy training sessions for researchers this week.

The rise of ChatGPT isn't just about AI—it's about how cluttered the web has become. Compare these recipes: ChatGPT gives me ingredients instantly, while a cooking website shows me an auto-playing video and a prompt to log into Google so I can see an ad

Instead of valentines this year, I’m sending copies of this tiny little book to family and friends. If you have not read it, get two copies today— one to keep and one to give. The first lesson: Do not obey in advance. The second: Defend institutions. It could not be more relevant.

What is good about this is one can learn how to stand up to authority at any point of time in their life if they are willing and able. Because I agree--standing up, speaking out, organizing, and protesting are muscles/skills that need exercising

We are very excited to announce a new @events.embl.org conference with a general focus on all infections with the goal to foster discussions across researchers working on multiple pathogens. We couldn't find a conference as such in Europe, so we decided to organize it 😊 www.embl.org/about/info/c...

Of course it’s a coup. Miss the obvious, lose your republic. open.substack.com/pub/snyder/p...

What to do as a regular citizen when facing autocrats, fascists, disruptors. This history-inspired advice by T‪imothy Snyder is as timely as ever: timothysnyder.org/on-tyranny

It's all gone. They've taken down all the CDC datasets from data.cdc.gov Data that's critical for public health & research. Data paid for by citizens. That the government now censors. "Do not fear those who tell the truth. Fear those who try to hide it. They are willing to sacrifice other things."

A word of caution: the apparent inevitability of charlatans is a consequence of the fact that quite often they come across as the most interesting folks in the room (even in science)
