I had my active DOE research grant abruptly cancelled yesterday afternoon. Funny thing is I was non-competitive sole-sourced on it. DOE came to me for the work but still saw fit to cancel the contract. The COs are terrified of losing their jobs and are trying to appease Musk. #WTF

Tholeiitic dolerite from Ben Hiant summit, Ardnamurchan, Scotland, which forms the highest point on the British mainland's most westerly projection. On a clear day the 360° (horizontal) panorama is unbeatable ... but this beauty is beneath your feet! #ThinSectionThursday ⚒️🧪🌋

Stumbled on a first American edition, first printing, 2nd state copy of The Hobbit. This book, printed in 1938 was sold in an original library binding to a tiny NV town. Can't wait to read the original "Riddle in the Dark". #tolkien #books #rarebooks #bookcollectors #hobbit

Finished Lawrence's Lady Chatterly's Lover, my 29th from the LeMonde 100 list. I do understand how a prudish and socially stratified society could be shaken by this wonderfully written book. #booksky #books #reading #LeMonde #bannedbooks

Finished Jack London’s Martin Eden today, my 28th from the LeMonde 100 list. London is terribly under-appreciated. #booksky #books #reading #LeMonde #jacklondon

🚨New paper alert 🚨 PhD candidate Annie Patton (UNR) shows that in calculating Mw for small earthquakes using spectral fitting, it’s particularly important to have well-constrained estimates of depth and apparent stress. Co-authored with an amazing team! Check it out here 👉 tinyurl.com/yk32j3yh

Ever wonder what was in MSWI combustion ash? The composition changes by region and season depending on what folks are doing in their lives. There are a lot of recoverable materials here. This is #geologyofgarbage. #geology #engineering #sustainability #techmetals #gold #cement

Is it normal to get aftershocks a month after a magnitude 5.7 like the Parker Butte earthquake in December? Yes, yes it is.

Ellisland, 1791 Dear Sir: Thou eunuch of language; thou Englishman, who never was south the Tweed; thou servile echo of fashionable barbarisms; thou quack, vending the nostrums of empirical elocution… —Robert Burns, Letter to a critic #BurnsNight news.lettersofnote.com/p/thou-pickl...

Kinda Scottish Patty’s Day celebrating the great Robert Burns. Drink copious Scotch whisky, eat weird stuff, wear weird stuff, sing and read poetry. We’re having Cock-a-Leeky soup (look it up), salmon, neeps & tatties. Washing it down with Dalmore 15. @robertburnsbot.bsky.social

Ae fond kiss, and then we sever; Ae fareweel, and then forever! Deep in heart-wrung tears I’ll pledge thee, Warring sighs and groans I’ll wage thee… —Robert Burns SELECTED POEMS & SONGS (OUP, 2013) #BurnsNight Listen to the song performed here by Robyn Stapleton www.youtube.com/watch?v=ax02...
