My parents were in the John Birch Society in the 70s. I grew up thinking the American population had been infiltrated by Soviets and the US population was so duped that “the country would drop into [Russian] hands like a ripe fruit”. Turns out it was an inside job after all. Horrific.

I was taught all those things on the left. And didn’t learn more of the real story until I was in my 50s. And I am pissed about that. I would never choose ignorance, who would? It’s not just an intellectual failing but a grave moral failing to choose to keep students ignorant.

I just heard a new term, “normalisation bias”. Closely related to cognitive dissonance. The tendency to come up with an explanation of why bad stuff right in front of your eyes is really OK. And by inference, the problem is you and your eyes, not the bad stuff.
