Though this painting depicts one of the beasts catching fire once struck by a spear, the archeological record shows evidence of self-immolation without being hunted was very common and likely the downfall of the species. The evolutionary purpose of such a trait is anyone's guess.

In 2016, the Kishony Lab at Harvard Medical School put together this demonstration of acquired antibiotic resistance in E. coli bacteria, creating a mega-Petri dish (2' x 4') with a stepped gradient of antibiotic. Seeing the mutants emerge & spread is an elegant demo of evolutionary change.

What I love about Andrewsarchus is that it is MUCH more closely related to a cow or deer or moose than it is to a dog or wolf, be it dire or grey. It's an Artiodactyl - one of the the even-toed ungulates.
