We are excited to announce the first Game Developers unConference! The unConference is an unconventional experiment –a leap of faith that we can do more when we come together than we can when we are apart. You can learn more here: www.gameworkers.co.uk/unconference/ Register here: lu.ma/3qrghakj

Well it took me waaay too long to realise my website still featured links to the Hellsite rather than to my profile here. Finally fixed: davidvarela.wordpress.com/contact/

I’d give myself a 4 out of 10, but I’ve recently been told that I give off a much angrier/tough tone than I intend so… thoughts?

For a decade, the Unforum was the backbone of the Alternate Reality Game (ARG) community. In 2017, a server crash took the site offline...until today Now, the Unforum has been brought back as a static archive: forums.unfiction.com Read about the restoration effort: cfia.org/preserving-t...

One day, I will post a history of my career in games through the medium of t-shirts and hoodies. Mind Candy will be disproportionately represented.

I’m always hugely envious when I go online and see my colleagues’ beautiful framed games on the wall behind them. I only ever got one (from Criterion for Star Wars: Battlefront II). So instead, I present to you an incomplete history of my career through the very British medium of MUGS… 1/?

None of my American followers will fully appreciate the genius of this.

And it's back! OPPORTUNITY US Senior Writer Not affiliated. Shares welcome lnkd.in/eggn4dkt

This story is horrifying. It's hard enough maintaining a studio's standards and ethics against external pressures without *your own colleagues* actively endangering not only people who are already subject to abuse but also those who are trying to protect them. I'm proud to say I would be a target.

More signatures needed to SAVE the iconic PRINCE CHARLES CINEMA! I had so many creative awakenings watching films there. Foremost were screenings of PRISCILLA, AKIRA, MOONLIGHT & ARRIVAL. It’s a loved London institution. Will you add your name and share too? you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/sa...

Sheesh. The brutality continues.

First it was the cookies with their ‘legitimate interest’. Then it was the chatbots with their ‘polite disagreement’. Next it will be the droids with their ‘civil disobedience’. And finally the killbots with their ‘sincere condolences’.

Interesting times at inXile. The New Orleans studio is seeing snow for the first time since 2008. Meanwhile, the Tustin studio is facing another day of 'extreme fire weather' warnings. This is fine.

My beliefs are true. Your beliefs are opinions.

Excited to see @solarisbooks.bsky.social reveal the brand new cover for the UK paperback of SAVAGE BOUNTY! It’s the second book in my Savage Rebellion series (the UK PB of the first book, SAVAGE COMPANY, is out now). SAVAGE BOUNTY is coming May 25 and you can preorder it now! geni.us/savagebounty

Can’t help reading this as exasperated. Punctuation matters, people.

Hard not to take this personally.

Bit slow to this, but I really enjoyed this video looking back on Samurai Siege. Nice to see the story getting a shoutout too! youtu.be/na_vN1rBYic?...

Word of the Day is ‘uhtcearu’ [ucht-kay-aru, with the 'ch' as in the Scottish ‘loch']: Old English for ‘the sorrow before dawn', when you lie awake in the darkness and worries crowd your mind.

Portrait of the artist as a young nerd… I just found this handwritten crib sheet, painstakingly scrawled in 4-colour biro across two sheets of A4, outlining the key moments of the 14th century poem Piers Plowman. This was me as a 20th century student. God I needed a laptop.

** Public Service Announcement for Brits** After getting annoyed with US date formatting in my email inbox, I've finally figured out that changing the 'Gmail display language' setting on Gmail from English (US) to English (UK) also changes the date formatting from mm/dd/yy to dd/mm/yy.

Happy 2025!

You can tell a lot about a household from the name of their WiFi network.

I wasn’t sure what to expect at yesterday’s Lucha Britannia + @slayduggee.bsky.social event at the O2. In retrospect, I really should have expected this metal version of Baby Shark (with bonus Pikachu and Olaf from Frozen).

UK WRITERS: You need to fill in this consulation. Govt is very clearly looking to an opt-out model of rights licensing that puts all the burden on creators instead of profiteers. It's long and boring but this is important. www.gov.uk/government/c...

Going to watch more Queer Eye tonight because apparently I enjoy crying over new soft furnishings.

I made the mistake of walking into Fortnum & Mason this morning. It was a Christmas hellscape, like Hamleys for grannies. Stay safe out there, shoppers.
