This has been the worst spring for sleeping in the OKC metro since I moved here in 2015. These nocturnal thunderstorms are just… relentless.

Mr. (Dr.) Furtado Goes To Washington. #AMSSciencePolicyColloquium

We just got an email that Hopkins is freezing salaries, hiring, and some construction projects. In addition to the 800 million USAID we lost, we’ve had another 50 million in grants canceled so far. And a 2/3 year over year decline in funded grants despite an increase in submissions

Flying over/ through Canadian wildfire smoke on my way to New York.

On my way to the @ametsoc.org Science Policy Colloquium in DC! But of course, OKC couldn’t make it an easy travel morning… 🫤 It was a thunderous and wild Uber ride to the airport. Now hoping my flight takes off at a reasonable time…

Thunder Up!!!

Exclusive: New student visa interviews are on pause as Trump’s admin weighs requiring foreign students applying in the U.S. to undergo social media vetting.

This is the latest power grab attempt by the Trump administration on higher education in this country. www.nytimes.com/live/2025/05...

Thunder Up!!

Heat burst this morning in SW / Central OK. The meteogram from Chickasha shows a surge to 96 F (!!!).

Great, but would have been much more effective 20-30 years ago. We MUST always remind people about the benefits of science and research. Over and over again.

The assault on higher education in this country is coming at all levels. This move by the Trump Administration is very worrisome and could be chilling for all other universities in this country. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/23/u...

Folks, it's 2025. If you're setting up a meeting(s) and not sending an Outlook/Google Calendar/iCal invite to the attendees, then is it really a meeting? Or, can we get this done over email? If it isn't on my calendar, I won't be there. Sorry. #FacultyLife

One Democrat (Elissa Slotkin - MI) also voted to block this effort. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/22/c...

We are seeing a combination of failure of scientific communication and the advocacy-coalition framework for policy here. Now, the quotations listed are purposefully selective to incite atmospheric scientists and others about this issue. There are many govt officials who support the NWS.

From @theathletic.bsky.social: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was named the NBA’s most valuable player after leading the Thunder to the league’s best record.

The U.S. research community needs to learn how to thrive with less money from the federal government. That was the blunt message from Michael Kratsios, science adviser to President Donald Trump and head of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. scim.ag/4k0EIiv

Yikes!

Sun’s coming out in Norman….

Not good.

Wisconsin is the new Oklahoma for 2025.

The Senate voted 18-2 to pass Senate Bill 26, which would eliminate daylight saving time in Alaska and ask the federal government to put Alaska on Pacific Standard Time. (From @alaskabeacon.com)

This is unreal for the middle of the July, let along mid-May!!!

Sounds bad.

Sounds… bad.

Friends and colleagues: Have you finished grading and turned in your grades? Me:

Literally holding a red light saber.

There’s some inaccurate NSF information spreading and causing extra panic. New increments on existing awards are paused. But: to the best of my knowledge, drawdown (reimbursement) on existing increments is not paused. ACMS is still accessible. Could change at any moment, though. Please share.

Even when the political winds shift, science must keep moving forward. That’s why @AGU and @ametsoc are stepping up with a first-of-its-kind special collection on climate change in the U.S.—across 29+ peer-reviewed journals. 🌍📚 Read all about it: buff.ly/6G05hQD
