About the presidency, Harry Truman famously said “the buck stops here.” Trump is trying to pass the buck and blame everybody but his administration for the DC plane crash. This is a time for consoling the families and investigating the cause of this tragedy, not shameful finger pointing.

The National Hurricane Center's post-storm report on Hurricane Beryl had higher winds and was slower to weaken than originally thought. The report also features a number of nuggets of information, statistics, and images. Here are some of the highlights. #houwx #HurricaneBeryl

Chicago cold and Houston cold.

Well didn’t expect to see that this morning.

What does it take to cancel school in Chicago? A wind chill near -30F.

It was cold this morning in Chicagoland. Wind Chills got as low as -24F in some areas.

From NWS Houston: “URGENT-WINTER WEATHER MESSAGE. WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT. Snow is expected. Heavy banding of snow likely in some areas. Snowfall totals of 3-5 inches expected in locations where heavy bands of snow occur. Totals of 1-3 inches expected elsewhere.” #houwx

From NWS Chicago: “Monday night into Tuesday morning will be the coldest period, particularly for areas near and north of I-80 (wind chills -20 to -29°F).”

From NWS Houston: “A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for all of Southeast TX from 6pm Mon-6pm Tue. Total snow accumulations: 3-5" across Metro Houston & other central areas; 1-3" north of Houston & along the coast. Locally higher amounts possible. Do not travel Mon night-Wed morning.” #houwx

Another event to keep an eye on is the expected winter storm developing for the Gulf states. I will mainly focus on the Houston area. Forecast models over night continue to support a snow event. It still appears that areas south of I-10 would experience a rain/snow/freezing rain mix.

It’s cold up here in Chicagoland, and wind chills will make it feel colder. Current wind chills are down to -9F and expected to drop even further.

Bitter cold temperatures arrive tomorrow in Chicagoland. Daytime temps are expected to be in the single digits with lows below zero in some areas. Wind chills are expected to be even lower, potentially down to -25F in some areas.

Bitter cold coming to Chicagoland and the potential for frozen precipitation for the Houston area. Looks to be an interesting few days.

Just realizing the Eaton fire started just south of the Mount Wilson Observatory.

It’s funny how making sure something or someone is accurate and providing correct information is now “censorship”.

Happy New Year everyone!

My 2024 summed up in these three photos. Here’s to 2025

Impressive little hook on HGX radar nw of Houston. Visually via a nearby traffic camera, only very broad rotation is being seen.

It’s a busy night at ORD. Inbound flights are stacked out to the lake and they just keep on coming.

Overnight a large brushfire started near Malibu, California. The fire is visible from satellite and radar imagery.

The white streaks seen in these three images are from last nights snow squall. These images are from the GOES-East satellite. The first is a true color composite, the second is a “natural” color composite with a snow/ice enhancement, the third is day cloud phase to help distinguish cloud types.

10 years ago today I saw my first rocket launch in person. EFT-1 was a test of the Orion capsule. Launched atop a Delta IV Heavy rocket. See more of my photos from that launch: michaelgphotography.smugmug.com/Spaceflight/...

A few screenshots from an EarthCam at Midway Airport as an intense Snow Squall made its way through the area.

LOT issues Snow Squall Warning [snow squall: OBSERVED] for Cook, DuPage, Will [IL] and Lake [IN] till 11:15 PM CST Link

Did some quick analysis charts for 0z. 500mb and surface. Shaded area in the 500mb chart are winds of 100 kts.

Snow Squall Warning: At 948 PM CST, a dangerous snow squall was located along a line extending from Hanover Park to Stickney, moving southeast at 30 mph.

I can tell you the Windy City is living up to its name tonight. Wind gusts above 55 mph have been reported in several locations.

From NWS Chicago, some timing on tonight’s gusty snow showers.

A Clipper system is passing by and expected to bring strong gusty winds and intermittent snow showers to the Chicagoland area.

Pretty impactful clipper is set to make it’s way through the Great Lakes and the northeast.

Lowest temperatures across Chicagoland this weekend. Also a look at Lake-Effect snowfall totals since Thursday.

Chicago Midway Pleasance earlier this month.

Also, NWS Buffalo has issued warnings related to forecasted Lake Effect Snowfall. This should begin tonight and last into Saturday.

Nice touch from the Aviation Weather Center, changing the usual NWS logo to a more festive one.

Hard freeze likely for the southeast next week. Here in Chicagoland we continue to track a possible winter storm. According to NWS Chicago, the likelihood of impactful snow appear to be decreasing, but the chances for rain and snow remain. Temperatures continue to drop this week into the weekend.

Winter weather forecasting is always interesting. For sure temperatures are expected to drop after mid week. But snowfall, that still remains in question.

Might be a cooling system leak again... arstechnica.com/space/2024/1...
